I seem to remember a sharply cut off tail, a Kammback, is supposed to be the best compromise:

Makes sense, as the same applies to hydrodynamics which is much the same thing but slower. I believe the blunt stern is one of the reasons why HMS Vanguard (the last battleship) was regarded as such a good sea boat.
