Am I the only one who thinks this was Vauxhall's peak in terms of style? PC Cresta and Viscount,FD Victor and HB Viva were the best looking things they ever did,in my opinion. I accept that this is an unusual view for someone born long after they all went out of production, but I stand by it. PA Crestas and F type Victors are horrible over styled and under sized things, the E-types are quite nice and I'd happily own a late PB or FB,but to me that was their pinnacle. Fuck all the FWD garbage.

My best mate, Wayne’s, Dad had a metallic red 2000SL Victor and we used to argue about which was better. The Victor was a 3 speed auto which trumped the Viscounts 2, I liked the separate rear seats in the Victor but the electric windows in the Viscount beat everything( I was 9).

Sorry for Wayne's dad but the Viscount pissed on the 2000SL, metallic paint or not. Always wanted a Viscount (, I've even got the period brochures Dad got when Grandad got his first FD) but never got one and they're out of my league now. Incidentally, and it's only family legend, but apparently Grandad's first FD was the first FD in the West Midlands. I can't prove or disprove this bit I do remember that he was very fond of it,a burgundy 1600, three speed on the column,LAW404F.

Its replacement was a gold (,Honey Starmist )2000SL,RUX417H. Four speed floor change ,and the first thing my Dad recalls which would pull uphill in top. Might not sound much, but they lived in Bridgenorth at the time and Dad was puttering round in a tired Minor Traveller as his first wheels

Corvette engine, supposedly built by Gordon Keeble for Vauxhall but I seem to recall it was actually Jim Keeble on his own as part of the "Keewest Development" engineering firm he founded down here in Southampton after the cars themselves finished.

Only one or two cars made I believe.
There’s a Road Test of that car on Trigger fromAS’ Retroroadtests on Flickr. Takes ages for me to find anything as technocripple.

It looks like a fucking right weapon for 1972.

Doesn't it just? Imagine rolling round in that at the time. Looks cool as fuck, that 327 will throb away beautifully and you won't find anything that'll beat you away from the traffic lights.

Back in the 80s I had a succession of Vauxhalls as runabouts, I think the first was a slightly* ratty looking J-reg white/rust/filler FD Victor 2000 estate bought for 100 quid from my mate's ex-RAF Bomber Command stepdad. It was very dependable and I drove it for about two years without any hiccups. Then came a succession of HB Vivas, one was 35 quid, next was around 60, there was a parts car bought for 20 quid that I made a profit on from selling bits, might have been another too. The useable ones were again dependable. I then had had a J plate red HC, that was okay but was 90 quid, it got part exchanged with the mate I had got it from for a '63 Pontiac Grand Prix. I did agree to buy a dark green HC (with Rostyles!) from a friend for 40 quid but before I drove it he offered me a 3.5yo FSO 1300P saloon for 200 quid plus the Viva back which I agreed to. Should have kept the Viva, that FSO was fucking awful but I made a profit on it when I reluctantly* sold it. I also had a 64 PB Cresta that was very clean, that was in 1986. I had a faded red Triumph 1500 that cost me 100 quid, it needed new tyres but luckily Kwikfit (other shit tyre places are available) were having a promotion of four tyres balanced and fitted for 40 quid, deal. A little while later a friend asked me if I wanted to swap the Triumph for his PB so we did the deal. I later put an ad in the Exchange & Mart for the PB for £475, remember them days? Chap from Chesterfield rang and asked if it was beige with a dark green roof and red interior. Indeed it was. Told me his grandad had bought one new in those colours so he hopped down to SE London on the trains and bought it for 450 quid, told me it was his first car as he was a biker but now had a family so needed a car. Not sure that a 2.6 PB with three on the tree was the best choice but hey he wanted it. It was last seen going into the Dartford Tunnel heading north, no idea if he made it safely. I liked my Vauxhalls. Oh and you can get a new '58 Chevy front wing inside a two door HB although the passenger then has to sit in the back.
