The diesels were perkins I think. Practically indestructible. The engine would still be running long after the shell was cubed. Did they use the same engines in boats? I think I can remember the local fishemen raving about them.

1600 Montego used the S Series, basically a revised E/R Series with a new head design. 2.0's used the O Series, a very decent and robust unit. The Perkins Prima was a dieselised O Series and was excellent. Strong and pretty pokey, it would do 50 mpg with ease.

Brilliant engines, but the water pump being part of the engine mount was a bit of an issue. They were also known as the Volvo Pentastar engine. Rover technically never sold the Perkins Prima, but did sell the MDI engine from Perkins..
