Reliant gearbox query
As you folks know I have a reliant trike. The gearbox has developed another issue and I'm confused as to what's occurring. since I've owned it its had a weak second gear syncro but lately the box has a bad whine in first and a rattling in neutral. Almost like a thrust bearing chatter. The new issue is reverse. It goes into reverse ok but really doesnt like coming out. It's as if it's in cement. It will move I. The gate forward and back but will not go back and to the left into neutral. I've resorted to twatting the lever to get it to move. I've changed the gear oil last week or week before when the first gear whine developed. The old oil was silver and sparkling. Cheers.

Re: Reliant gearbox query
If you turn the engine off does it come out of gear ok with no load?
Sounds a lot like a dragging clutch or an oil problem like on the old type 9s in Sierras that needed the special synthetic oil or wouldn't shift nicely until red hot.

Wonder if it would be worth flushing it with a gallon of paraffin just shift it backwards and forwards a few yards or something then drop and refill with correct oil?

Re: Reliant gearbox query
Oil used was 80/90 as recommended. A friend did mention dragging clutch too. Comes in and out with engine off. I had to turn tick over up a touch when I took it on a run today and it's not as bad now in or out. Surely low tickover cant do that?

Re: Reliant gearbox query
At the time 2007? they were. The bearings are stock. The synchro rings were pricey (c.£30 ea.)
Having checked Parts World, I couldn't see them listed, but then I don't think they were listed back then and the good old-fashioned telephone and speaking to people yielded the parts.
As it was a Rebel box, I was in the Ford dealership getting a tail shaft bush as it's common to old Fords - and credit to them, they managed to order one in.
It was quite painless getting parts for a 35 year old gearbox. Not so sure about now. I'm sure some people have gear clusters and laygears hiding under the bed somewhere (not me)
