I remember all the managers being given MK4 Cortinas as company cars at a firm I worked for. They were so tight they bought the 1.3 and apparently they struggled to better 20 mpg.

The Personnel manager was especially pissed off as she used to to tow her horsebox. Fuck knows how she did that as it's a bit hilly around Batley and Dewsbury.

Yeah, there comes a definite point where having a smaller engine in a car is a diseconomy.

I actually get better fuel economy out of the 6.4 than I did from the last Challenger I had with the 5.7 which sounds odd but this one has so much torque you barely need to open the throttle to hold speed.

You used to get a 1.3 cavalier too. I bet that was joyous.
The 1.3 would have to be thrashed to make progress I guess hence the shit economy.

I think with the Cortinas it was the VV carb.

1300 tin-front Cavs were as bad as you'd expect an over-bodied HC Viva to be but the Mk2 1300s were a lot better. We had a 1.3 Marina estate at work, that was a fucking barrel of laughs too, especially as it had all the techies gear in it all the time. Again, 1.3 Itals were so much better......

I think that the mk2 had the family one engine with 70hp, the same as a lot of 1600s at the time.

Yes, it was the same as the Astra engine I believe. I remember when the Mk2 came out my gaffer moaning that they "only did" a 1600 whereas his company Mk1 was a 2 litre. The 1800 came later (which he could have had if he'd waited....) and was nicely under the new company car tax bracket too.
