Minis were expensive to build, whether that was because of outdated plant or a poor adaptation of the design to mass production I don't know. The Minor Traveller must have been inefficient to build what with the woodwork. Monocoque car bodies of that era were very dimensionally innacurate, must have been difficult to marry up timber and steel with consistently acceptable results.
BL should have off set problems like the aforesaid with good margins on cars like the Stag and SD1, both of which were ludicrously cheap. Partly to avoid stepping on Sir William Lyon's toes I would guess.

It's usually the acillaries that write motor off. Clutch, turbo, ecu, flywheel etc. Very rare an actual motor fails nowadays.
There are always exceptions though.
