Re: What did you do today?
I think the belt had gone hard, pulleys were ok, back home now as the RAC bloke was old school and had a selection of belts on his van, one of which fitted. He bled and topped up the coolant and it's driven home fine. It could have been worse.

You will be keeping a spare in the boot now... don't rely on the belt the chap fitted to be the right one.

Whenever I service a car, I put the old belt etc in the boot. You never know when you might be thankful for it.

Re: What did you do today?
Second hand timing tool set arrived today for the Clio, so I can get on with removing the crank pulley.
These should just freely slide in and out of that slot
Looks like a full on cambelt job then to sort this properly! Basically worse case scenario with his job and becoming significant project creep.
Supposed to replace the dephaser pulley. Basically it's a pulley that fills with oil and does the variable valve timing magic. Thinking may not as they're £150 on their own.

Re: What did you do today?
That's a lot closer than an ex's fiestering when a so called professional mechanic did the head gasket. They use a similar tool across the end of the head & on both cams one slot was totally above the tool & one below. I think it had two or three teeth of belt extra between the cams.

Re: What did you do today?
With the clio timing tool there should be a bit of movement on the cams just turn them slightly and they will line up. The crank is the important bit to get set as that has the floating pulley.

Re: What did you do today?
That's all currently locked up, so I'll need to undo the pulleys and make them floating to get them aligned up. Hence why as I might as well change the belt while I'm there.
You're probably the best person on here to know about them as you have dealt a lot with Laguna's and the like, but Dephasers. What's your experience of them failing? Especially after a belt job?
