Didn't the yanks go metric? I thought they did after years of using the wrong versions of Imperial. They didn't even know how big an inch was ffs, let alone a gallon.

NB septic inches are the same as British codger ones. It's mainly the fluid measurements & suchlike that the colonials had problems with.

On some maps the UK is differently coloured because we still use some imperial left-overs. But otherwise we're essentially metric.

I'm sure I've read the Merlin didn't work when the yanks first built it as they used the wrong inches so the clearances were wrong?

Nope, not that I've heard. And as I said, septics use the same inch as the British did.

My understanding is that Rolls Royce relied upon manual fettling to get it to fit together properly whereas Ford went down the mass production route and had to change things as a result.
