Replaced an Audi A4 front wheel bearing. Not as tragic as you might think, mainly by ignoring the Haynes Book of Lies.

Re: What did you do today?
I did waxoyling. Have tried using old gearbox oil but after 2 years it's gone from the flat bits of bare metal.
It was so cold yesterday I had to keep reheating the pot, but hope that augers well for the stuff staying put. The wax inside the chassis was still there from 2010 which isn't bad; I added more. Replaced the rear crossmember back then, but though it had some kind of stoved black coating on it which was hard to grind off for welding, it quickly fell off and this part of the chassis is rustier than the 63 year old original areas.
Back when I did that work I replaced all the brake parts using decent hoses but cheap pattern cylinders. I'm happy that I've never had to top up the silicone fluid since and apart from inspecting and cleaning out the dust they've not needed touching. Linings are half worn. In those years it's covered about 30000 miles, not much, but it's been reliable.
I de-turboed the engine when I put it in, joining it to a standard cheap stainless exhaust. Still much better than the old 2.25 and it just manages 70 on 3.54 diffs.- christine

Yep, auto, and AW55. Mum's Mini takes the same ATF so some is going in soon.SiC wrote: ↑Thu Feb 27, 2020 9:57 amAuto or manual? If auto, get ATF changed as unlikely to have been changed due to sealed for life bollocks.
Wikipedia says it's the venerable AW55 if an auto. Alright gearbox by this age if fluids changed. Volvo say filled for life, Aisin Warner said ~75k changes (iirc and can't remember exact but will be -/+ 10k miles).

More snow chaos up the glen. I popped down to forfar for some 2 by 2s and returned to a stuck tesco delivery van. It was bringing my tea, so the crates were transferred into my transit.
An empty RWD pick up with double wheels is probably the worst vehicle in the snow. Fortunately I'm a god behind the wheel of any machine.

So that's two gods on here now.
Many more and it'll be like ancient Greece.

I rated my twin wheel van quite highly in the snow, mind it's never ever unladen, the tall narrow tyres seem to work quite well.

Short wheelbase Daf LF 7.5 tonners are pretty good in the snow, you can drift them as well as a RWD car
