Re: EML and Mot
Only before 1 July 2008
It's covered in the "Compression ignition engine emissions" section 8.2.2:
It's covered in the "Compression ignition engine emissions" section 8.2.2:
Engine malfunction indicator lamp (engine management light or ‘EML’)
Turn on the ignition and check that the engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminates and then goes off. On some vehicles it will be necessary to start the engine before the MIL goes off.
You need to inspect MIL fitted to diesel vehicles with 4 or more wheels and first used on or after 1 July 2008.
Kit cars, amateur built vehicles and American pickups are not required to be fitted with an engine MIL.

Because not all testers don't know the manual as well as they should. Often a gentle reminder can help. Or choose a better garage if they argue too much.

Oh, i've bought it as a failure . I didn't get it tested ! I can fix the slow wipers, but can Sic fix the ABS light over the internet ?.. and i haven't got a code reader !
I wouldn't know what to do with a code reader anyway..

Re: EML and Mot
Years back I had a probe stuck up the exhaust of my Reliant Rebel and 7% CO was showing on the screen, to which I gently reminded the tester that it was "too old for that shite" and he remember to do just a visible smoke check.
Some testers are fannies and rubbish at remembering all these dates and even then don't RTFM to check.
Last discussion I had where they conceded I was right was over a NCT test failing the front top suspension mounts on the Honda Jizz. I told them there was fuck all wrong with it and after some umming and ahhing they retested and passed it.
The Jizz, like the Ka has conical mounts that are designed to have stacks of play when there's no weight on the suspension you fucking morons.

Re: EML and Mot
This looks to be a reasonably decent ELM327 if it has the PIC microcontroller in it like the description says:
