My friends next door neighbours,an older couple of their mid 60s asked me if they can come on the trike to the service with me. I did pre warn them that it will be very cold, the back seat will be wet too. They said fine. I then told them I really suggest they wrap up warm and need a towel to sit on because the back seat will be sodden when sat on. They came with a thin towel and not very thick clothes. They both said they are warm so I tried to make them known of windchill when exposed on the trike is quite a lot but yet they still said they were fine. Went to ceremony then 8 miles to the wake at 530 this evening. To get to the wake I have to take the bypass for 2 junctions on an unlit stretch of dual carriageway. I was doing around 65-70 mph and when we got there they were freezing. I did feel bad for them but the both said they loved it regardless of how cold it was. I later found out the old lady had had half her liver removed 3 weeks previous and hadn't long been out of hospital due to complications 😯

Today,not so much
Not feeling very well but had to go to a meeting in Nottingham for my son. Trike was the only thing with fuel in it so had to be the steed of choice. Wrapped up warm and went on my way. Going towards codnor to get onto the bypass I noticed it wouldn't idle so I kept on going being mindful at lower engine speeds to keep the throttle up a touch. Made it all way down the a610 and under the m1 bridge with no issues. Got to main nuthall island and the fun began. Lights go green so I pull off and trike bogs down cuts out in middle of island. Got it going again and it does it again in single carriageway road in Nottingham rush hour,I wasnt the favourite person out this morning. Lots of ice on carb so I suspect carb icing. By now though I've a terrible rattle in first gear and fits certainly fighting me. Manage to get to meeting 10 minutes late so I dump it and walk to the place. I take Ill in the meeting so have to leave early. Trike wouldn't start for nothing. Aa called and I tell them that its suspect carb fuel delivery issues plus failing gearbox. They tell me I have to wait 3 hours for a van to come out and feck knows how long again for a recovery truck. They cannot just send a truck apparently, they can fix it roadside. Yea ok. I get it running again and cancel breakdown. Raunning like shit at the minute, engage reverse ok but when trying to go back to neutral it's like the gear stick is in treacle. I'm home but in pain, tired and run down. Everyone asking silly money for a gearbox too lately. oh fuck sticks.

Is it a vw beetle/ bay gearbox?

If it is I can post something on a VW forum for you.
What's your idea of a reasonable price?

Sorry, I always think that trikes are VW based.

Yes its reliant based. Based so heavily in fact that it's an unmodified chassis. Pretty much just had body shell lifted off. Theres a guy selling one but it's out of my reach at the minute.

What sort of reputation do the boxes have? Is there a common fault on them?
Whining that bad could be bearings or it could be damaged gears in the box, bearings are relatively cheap - is it worth stripping it to see what had failed?

The boxes are fine and a piece of piss to rebuild. I did a Rebel 4-sychro one just like it (except longer tail shaft) some years ago in a mate's kitchen.

What sort of reputation does Bub have? ;)

In fairness, if someone has plonked the wrong oil in the past, it's probably eaten the synchromesh bits up. There are two big bearings a needle roller and the laygear runs on a pair of needle rollers.

In years I've known them I've not heard if gear box failures, just the c clip for gear lever not holding it tight enough so goes out of kilter (my robin did it frequently) most known for head gasket failures but again down to lack of maintenance usually as eddie will probably concur. My trike is based on a rialto of 1983,the engine and box though are 1988. The speedo also says 71052 miles. Its said 71052 for a few weeks now, speedo still works so no bother. Dont know where the speedo came from so no telling of engine or box mileage or past history. In my ownership over 2 years ive changed gear oil twice but it's always had a graunchy second gear syncro. Also change engine oil and filter every 1500 to 2k approximately which works out about a year of mileage. I've changed plugs, replaced electronic ignition and air filter once in my ownership which I think is decent considering the engine.
