Electric vehicles, pros and cons. Have your say.

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

Just keeping them on charge should keep the batteries warm.

Isn't there an issue with some types of battery that they can be damaged if they're on on charge continually?

Aye. But I'm pretty sure cats have all the clever charge control electronics built in for each cell. Damn sure I've read somewhere the cells get hotter when fully charged and the car directs the power to just the ones that need it

Then catches light anyway

As a rough rule lithium ion batteries should be kept between 15% and 80-85% to keep them in top condition. Leaving your laptop plugged in 24/7 fucks the battery. The one I use is plugged in permanently but I've recycled the battery as the previous owner had dome this and knackered it, it used to get hot as the laptop was constantly trying to charge poorly cells.

My Dewalt impact driver wouldn't charge for the first time the other day as it was too cold, I had to have it in my pocket for 40 mins to warm it up. Normally I fetch my tools out and keep them in the house every night but they got left in my mates van overnight, hopefully it's not damaged them. Your typical electric car is fundamentally no different to an upscaled version of that battery pack with the same electronics to protect them and make sure they don't become a danger, be that from getting too hot, being depleted too far etc etc.

My drill battery was too cold to charge last week too , flashing red led . I put it in the air fryer for a few minutes , and the charger then said yes , and went green !

My tools live in vehicles permanently, the cold definately knocks down both the capacity and amount of power available - tools are noticeably less powerful

How long until some mouth-breather tries to DC charge his MG / Tesla from the railway third rail?
Hmm, it's likely an Auditron driver that first gets fried trying that...
