Budget tyres are landfill. I’ve got a set of Excellons on my 118d and they are shit.

I buy part worn proper tyres. 5 or 6mm and a pair at a time. I bought a pair of 225/50x16 Goodyears with 6mm for £60 plus a tenner to fit and balance.

I generally agree but these Davanti ones seem ok.

My old man had a set of them fitted to his 350Z because he's tight and we were driving to Portugal the next day, they've been surprisingly good as well. I've driven it in some very, very heavy rain and all good, quiet too.

I was most disparaging at the time about unknown Chinese death rings but have been proven wrong.

My current favourites right now is the Kumho. Mostly as it's a decent size brand (that I've heard of) and I have had them before. Not the absolute best tyre from experience but certainly not bad. Drove alright with the compromise being more noisy than the expensive premiums.
Basically a safe bet in my eyes that is not a silly price and i can get them fitted relatively quickly. I.e. buy what you know has worked before for you.

I have heard that Nankang have come on leaps and bounds. Seen quite a few people rating some of their tyres as superb for trackdays. Excellent handling while being affordable and less of a concern to scrub a set in a session.

For mid-range tyres I don't think you can beat Avons.

Avon are an extra tenner each than the Kumho/Nankang and I have to wait a week (so after Xmas) if I want them. They all have also a similar wet weather/fuel efficiency rating so possibly much of a muchness.

So probably off the short list.

Those wet weather/fuel efficiency/noise labels are not standardised from manufacturer to manufacturer. They are based on the manufacturers own tests.

I haven't found anywhere decent near me that sells part worns. Scrapyard want £25+ a tyre fitted and gave an attitude of cba.

The local part worn place had a shite selection of 8+ year old tyres and no matching 4 brands. Also packed with a long wait surrounded by noisy families running around while waiting for their beaten up Grandland X having their threadbare tyres replaced.

Yeah but at least with Kumho and Nankang there is a better chance they'll try to keep to the standards rather than slapping a badge on that fits theirs sales departments wishes.

The DVSA also actually do market enforcement of them too:
https://www.gov.uk/government/publicati ... -labelling
Wet grip performance
Of the 20 different tyres tested for wet grip performance, 9 tyres performed at a lower rating than rated on the tyre label.

Fuel efficiency performance
Of the 20 different tyres tested for fuel efficiency performance, 1 tyre performed at a lower rating rated on the tyre label. 4 tyres performed better than rated on the tyre label.

Noise levels
Of the 20 tyres tested for their noise levels, 4 were found to be louder than the value declared by the manufacturer. One tyre performed better than rated on the tyre label.

None of the tyres failed to meet all 3 declared values on the label, but 3 tyres failed to meet 2 of the values specified on the tyre labels.

Next steps
We will follow up these results with the tyre manufacturers to ensure that the tyre labelling is accurate.

We’ll continue this work into 2024. We will test different sizes and brands of tyres against the tyre label parameters to check for their accuracy.
