A mate of mine at work got a mk1 as a company car when they first came out,

He got the piss taken out of him on a regular basis by the other consultants, who were mainly in their 20s/early 30s, and drove things like 330is, 230CLKs etc.. It was a VW in a fancy frock.

These were people who could actually have one not just dream about them.

Loads of cars are hated vehemently by some but sold by the buckets and well loved. Whether that's a MX5 (hair dressers car), MGB (slow, bad handling, rusty pile of junk) or even classic VW Beetles.

The original TT is no different. Audi sold hundreds of thousands of the things. A very large quantity ended up over here.

Fast (for their time and still okay now), unique eye-catching styling, expensive (new) but still achievabley affordable.

Anyone got bigger bollocks than Mario and feeling brave right now. 8k is a bit over my silly car budget but you never know.

To me, and I know fuck all about restoring cars apart from it being very expensive, at least in my case, this is well worth the additional 15k. Assuming it's not a rustbucket underneath of course.

15 grand buys an awful lot of parts. If I was that daft I would rather buy an 8k one and spend 15 k than buy the 23 grand one. At least if you do it yourself you know it's done right. Years ago when I had my Maserati I priced all the parts for the 24k service. The parts were actually more expensive than the "specialist" wanted to do the service. Obviously the "specialist" wasn't replacing everything the manufacturer says should be done.

Thing is that a car such as an SM is only worth going the whole hog on. No point in having a shagged one, just misery, endless graft and money.
If I can't afford to pay for something like this http://citrothello.net. I'd rather drive a Marina.
A shagged Marina is not worth much effort, but relatively little gets it useable. Shrug, smile and use it (until some tosser drops a piano on it).
