Thought so. I like them engines, easy to fix and fun to drive.

Re: What did you do today?
Found another old treasure trove of old VWs locally.
There were a bunch of old beetles and an oval windowed beetle.
Again I was beaten to the car I would like (second refusal but more likely found a sucker that was willing to pay more than he was asking for it). This was mixed in with a number of 70s bugs - one Bajaed and others more stock. TBH I wasn’t looking for a car, but that got me thinking an oval project would be nice. I mentioned it to a friend…
He told me of another guy in MN who has dabbled in VWs since the 80s, who is now clearing out his ‘will get to it one day’ projects. He has around fifty or so aircooled cars stored away.
I went to meet him at his shop and wasn’t disappointed.
He has a bunch more cool stuff inside that he is working on and more in containers.
Spent a couple of hours talking about cars and he pulled this out. A pretty nice oval will lots of wrong parts on it (but he has more than enough original stuff to get it back closer to how it was). Very tempted.
Either way, it was great meeting someone else who ‘got’ the VW thing (and yes, he has some VW Things as well).

Re: What did you do today?
The Punto was booked in for its mot tomorrow but that will have to be cancelled.
When investigating a C0033 abs code I discovered some loose metal.
Time to get the spring compressors out.
Hopefully this explains the abs code.

Re: What did you do today?
Will a year go by when I don't have a broken spring to fix?
While I wait on new springs arriving for son's punto, I fitted the steering rack pipes for daughter's polo, received today from a scrappy down south. Not a spot of rust on them.
The easiest access to the top of the rack is down the back of the engine. Awkward AF. Who's idea was it put the steering fluid reservoir under the battery tray?
Fortunately I have foot long long-nose pliers and long fingers.
New* pipes fitted and power steering has been restored.
Daughter will be chuffed as she knew I wasn't keen on fitting a new rack.

It must get so depressing watching stuff literally dissolve in front of your eyes, have you tried lathering then underneath with old oil mixed with a bit of wax oil or similar?

Re: What did you do today?
I do wonder if there is a business opportunity in driving up our plentiful supply of cheap, mostly rust free cars from down here up to Scotland!
If I was faced with that everytime my car needed work, I think I would just have a new car on lease instead.

Re: What did you do today?
I slathered burst oil on the underside of my x trail but it got washed off fairly quickly. I've tried waxoil in the past with limited success. I put grease on most fixings when refitting.DodgeRover wrote: ↑Mon Jul 24, 2023 9:44 pm It must get so depressing watching stuff literally dissolve in front of your eyes, have you tried lathering then underneath with old oil mixed with a bit of wax oil or similar?
The punto is looking particularly scabby. Not so much on the bodywork but subframe, running gear etc.
