Went out for a run in the MGB before the coast road gets chocka with caravans and dozy tourists.

I think my fuel pump might be on the way out even though it's only a couple of years old. I'll have to have a play around, I've already checked the in line filter and there's no obstruction there so a jam jar is the next step,

If your pump is mech the modern ones don't seen to like inactivity.....The electronic SUs are much more amenable to that in my experience. Both of mine are 10 years old now. Might be worth a new filter first though even if not apparently clogged as I have had more than one with unseen restriction owing to poor construction.

What is the fuel gauge doing and is the rear reversing lights working properly?

Fuel pump woes are things that caused 3/4 of the breakdowns I've had in my B. First pump, second ground, third positive power feed under the bonnet.

The earth is shared with the gauge and rear lights. It goes to the rear number plate mount screw in the boot and isn't the best place for a connection. As the pump is right next to the battery, a new earth feed was run in parallel from the pump negative straight to the battery negative.

Under bonnet connection was a dodgy Lucas bullet connection. Could be worth checking the bullet is clean and tight in the joiner.

Most pumps are pretty durable, especially the SU electronic and Hardi. However if the tank is rusty and pulling up crud, it can jam up the intake of the pump. Likewise any air leak from the tank connection to pump can cause issues. I have to tighten up the banjo connections on my pump every so often. Usually the outlet that leaks on mine and causes a petrol drip under the car.

I've actually pulled my finger out, got a decent size unit, moved one of the 205's up there and, ripped the engine out of it.
Good times.
I definitely lost my car fixing mojo when the 508D shat itself, after all I'd done do it.
All my spare time was spent on that for 7-8 months and, the engine blew on its first outing. Wounded me.
Anyway, I'm back now and, intending to show my son how to properly blow up an XUD engine, with too much boost and too little wastegate.
