Doesn't seem a bad price for what looks to be a decent example

I remember my dad had one of these as a company car. He swapped to it with a colleague, from his Cavalier as he wanted the extra boot space. Also the Cavalier broke down a few times and having a young family, my mum didn't like it.

My memory of it is sitting in the back seats and the suspension squeaking on every slight movement.

There's a gap in the market now that this firm has gone bust but 60,000 feet over Doncaster doesn't sound quite as exotic.

"Fly 60,000 feet high over Cape Town in the legendary English Electric Lightning. The supersonic British fighter climbs toward space with amazing speed. Often compared to the F104 Starfighter that NASA has used to train astronauts for space travel, the Cold War-era Lightning can climb upward at an incredible 50,000 feet per minute."

Well it couldn’t end worse than the original. One of their Lightnings speared in after a (typical for a Lightning) fire started. Pilot killed following an ejection failure. No flights since, too dodgy even for Cape Town.

I was wondering what else of that era might still be flying that might be even more dangerous:

"As of 2019, the FAA registry listed 12 privately owned F-104s in the United States.[244] Starfighters Inc, a civilian demonstration team in Florida, operates several former Italian Air Force F-104 Starfighters.[245] Another, 5303 (104633), civil registry N104JR, is owned and operated by a private collector in Arizona"

I guess there's some early MiGs around as well but have no idea where they fit on the 'widow maker' scale.

Obscure, interesting and probably a pain in the arse when it goes wrong, trying to work out where the bits come from.

I can remember when they were cheap.

Throughout the 80's Marina saloons were cheap as chips, also my favourite disposable transport.
Buy a runner for under £100, get it mot-ed which usually involved some welding, then just drive it for 12 months, then repeat.
Far easier to maintain than any of the main opposition and much more economical.

I sold my last one in early 1991, a 1981 Ital 1.3 saloon, averaged about 200 miles a week during the year I owned it and never a ftp.
