Does the gearbox have lockup only on top gear or is it on many of them? They are the biggest difference to fuel economy when doing city/town/slow a+b-roads.

I can't recall but 4 speed not 5 made them less pleasing to drive.

I drove D Fowler's 740 auto estate last night. It were a lovely beast, I may end up being an SVM chap in the future. Even Girlfriend_70s approved.
As for the Dolomite debacle the 1300 has an engine being built, it's just not done and winter is now here. While a mid-Winter engine swap isn't off the cards I'd really rather not... The 1850 is a garden ornament, loads of bits on it but nothing worth money because it always was shabby as fuck, remote enough that it's scrap value isn't worth the effort of attempting to arrange it being baled.

Got some good stuff from ALDI today, a pair of axle stands and a portable bottle jack. 12.99 each. When my mate called around for help the other day, I said my ramps and axle stands are in use supporting the Humber, but remembered seeing some axle stands in the store. He went to buy some and I was very pleasantly surprised at their quality and construction, expecting them to be thin and weedy for the price. But no, they are very sturdy. So I resolved to buy a pair to complement my much larger older pair, and got a bottle jack too, which comes in its own compact carry case. Ideal if, like me, you are sometimes reluctant to use the single central jacking point.

23mpg probably isn't far off the mark for an auto, they don't lock up until you're doing 55 in top. I'm getting high 20s in mine (20V 2.5 manual) on local work, mid 30s on a long A road run and low 30s on a long motorway run. I can't see much it comes down to as driving style makes no odds, PCV is clear, ignition was overhauled a few months ago, there's little I've not given it except a cambelt...
