No, the gasket was in good shape so went back on.
Also had a go at leveling out the manifold. Looks like it will need to be milled flat, it does have a significant warp.
However, for now I should be able just to double gasket it and get it to seal.

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
The reason why I say I'm thinking it's the valves because I had taped up all the ports with duct tape- #8 exhaust had coolant leak in from the bolt that should be a stud and filled the port up; packed up another one had filled up with condensate so that's my rationale.
I'll clean it all up and hopefully it should be good.

I re-use a OHV head gasket no problem. As long as it's in good condition. A side valve is pretty agricultural, I'd wager this is around 6.5:1 CR? Coat the valve stems in lubricant before fitting.

Yeah, 6.4:1 and hardly hi-po but once the valve gets a little warm it sticks then it warms up more and unsticks
Big copper and asbestos gasket- good for a few reapplications, it didn't leak this time round, the coolant even held pressure.

Re: 1951 Pontiac Chieftain
I think I may have managed to sort most of this out from up underneath.
Little bit of adjustment and a bit of a tune up and it's running better. New gaskets will help significantly, and hopefully new ignition components too.

That's a thing of beauty, pull up a chair, crack open a beer and watch the show.

Good to see Grumpman back and firing on all 8.
