Re: Ford meets suzuki. Oh dear.
Makes sense to me.
Gears are helicel so push apart on the over run, that's match a sound slowing down and the cogs are trying to push them themselves apart.

That's our thoughts too. Would explain notchiness and weird box behaviour like occasionally grinding and whining

Re: Ford meets suzuki. Oh dear.
CV joints, load is changing when in reverse or braking causing the noise? You could always repack then with grease and see if it helps?
In all honesty I would use it till it breaks though or sounds significantly worse.
Gearbox oil is probably a red herring as chances are it's never been changed before

The cv joints could be an idea but they don't make any other noise at all. No clicking or thumpin and no slop in driveshafts.

Re: Ford meets suzuki. Oh dear.
I'm getting a little fucked off with the ignis.Grey smoke when idling for a minute or 2 when you pull away like at traffic lights and starting with a rotten egg smell from exhaust with a whiff of coolant and oil/petrol. Done 5300 miles in it since October though. I think come mot time in march it may well need welding up so it will probably end up scrapped. As it stands it's got a wanky gearbox, shot engine mount,2 blowing exhaust joints, grinding starter motor, surface corrosion under rear end but getting rather bad around rear towing eye, driver inner sill and driver outer sill is soft, possible head gasket failure as coolant is pressurising and maybe the catalyst. Wish me luck.

I'm glad you're keeping up the plan of a sacrificial vehicle to keep your luck away from the Focus.

The focus has just been a great car. My luck isn't that bad lately and hasn't been for over a year now. What folk don't tend to see is how hard takeaway delivery can be on a car. Constant stop start, traffic, engine on and off all night. It's hard work.
