Saturday, the plan was to get the rear axle off

Jacked up the axle, supported the chassis on axle stands, dropped the axle. Now normally this would release tension on rear springs, done it many times, the 2" lifted springs meant that this didn't happen, which I was aware of.
I was able to remove the rear brakes, both calipers are shagged out and heavily contaminated with axle hub grease .. Also removed the new brake flexi and propshaft

next up is to remove the dampers and I made a huge fuck up, supported the passenger side of the axle on a jack and removed the damper. Then got distracted talking while undoing the drivers side damper. the axle was hanging off the bastard. In a nutshell the tension from the spring shot the axle down, the disc bounced off the workshop floor and then it settled. Alas my pointing finger was under it. squashed fucking flat, deep cut across the back and a burst on the tip, the nail is black. Good news is that the nerve ends still work and the bone isn't broken, I simply cannot be arsed to wait in A&E for 3 days to get seen. Bad news is that it still makes me feel ill at my stupidity!

On standard suspension with the a-frame still attached there is only gravity to mess with and the springs are wobbly on the axle. On this setup I had to jack the rear end of the chassis up a further 6" to fully release the spring tension.

A-frame pivot but up less of a fight, sharp tap and it is free. The boge self levelling unit is however dead

with the axle resting on jacks, no dampers or a-frame attached I jacked up the rear of the chassis until the springs fell out. Undo the two radius arms and rolled it out

stripped off the parts that need refurb, the radius arms are to be poly bushed, the stub axles need to be removed, cleaned and replaced with gaskets rather than bathroom sealer.

Found that the axle breather was blocked solid

Fitted up polybushes, found one rear disc was 8mm thick, minimum is 12mm, certainly got V for M out of that then, all 4 rear wheel bearings are also verty tired. easy to rebuild.

Indeed and nobody feels more stupid than I over the whole sorry debacle, 10 days on it looks like a squashed baked potato but is healing up  ! anyway onwards and upwards.

Still with the rear axle, both rear hubs are shagged out, I think a mixture of sand, deep wading, general abuse and a 29 year old part

The diff is leaking oil from the gasket face and also the drive flange  which was also shagged out

The diff itself though was perfect! mesh was absolutely bang on and no way is this a 212k km diff. Must have been replaced when the previous owner gashed the diff pan open on one of their explorations

However previous owner was also responsible for smoothing filler over the entire top rail, once flapped off this became a familiar story. the rest of the inner wing is perfect so this is an easy job

Same text here as on beige for those who follow both

Finished patching up the top rail and side curtain of the drivers side front inner wing, kind of wish that I had just cut it all out and replaced with single chunks. 99% will never been seen with outer wing fitted and stuff under the bonnet will be further hidden by loom, battery etc

Loom is becoming a "bulls acre" Autosparks cannot help, bought a 1990s loom complete and will have to get that working most of this car is later loom anyway with exception of door looms and connectors to the rear loom.

watch this space
