I had a 1.6L saloon version of these in 1987, E126YWC.
They've certainly aged well.

It goes well enough for a 1.3 4 speed, wee bit of rust around the rear arches but new replacement panels can be had for £44 a side so not the end of the world to sort out.
It's a little bit bouncy, maybe needs some shocks and possibly a set of tyres.

I don't think that they were too bad compared to the competition, they seemed better built than the Sierras at the time, by what I remember.

There were always some in the scrapyard with less rusty bits though unlike Sierra's.
I changed all 4 doors on my saloon, then the gearbox and engine and lastly the interior. I think we put a pair of sills on it as well as arches. The panels were all dead cheap though.

My dads mechanics could have a clutch done in 30 minutes . I could do one in 50 minutes .brilliant design ..

Saying that , a bloke i went motor racing with had a escort mk1 with a cossie turbo engine , he had the box out ,new clutch in box back in in 35 minutes flat , on his back in the rain at Brands Hatch paddock .

Was he going round a left hander at the time?

I think the book time for a clutch was 30 mins but you could do it slightly quicker. I did one on an Astra in a single car garage on the floor in 40 mins for a mate of mine back in the day. The 5 speed wasn't quite as easy and they got harder with the later cars. Vauxhall realised making a car that was so simple to maintain was losing their dealers money.
