So yesterday the Washing commenced

Well I say washing but it was more decontaminating

A trim to Halfords and it was suggested I use something they swore by called Jizer it smelled like orange juice and it was diluted in my trusty tin watering can with water and i was told to liberally apply and wait 10 minutes before rinsing it off with clean cold water,

The man at Halfords suggested once it had been on 5 minutes to agitate it with a clean unused paintbrush I didn't mind throwing away so i got the cheapest ones i could find at the local market diy stall on the way home.

I started one panel at a time

Apply and Agitate its looking cleaner already

Then rinsed off

Look at that wing! difference between that and the bonnet :o

Image

Then bit by bit the Jizer went to work and munched through the grime (and the paint probably)

The Roof was disgusting

Image

The Boot clean up nicely until I investigated more closely  (more of that in another report)

Image

Then I started on the windows, left as was right a quick wizz over with the Jizer :o

I can see clearly now the Bird Mucks gone i can see all obstacles in my way

Image

Then the final pic,yes I know its not finished but you get the idea

Image

You see I had 7 exposures left on the film and my neighbour had been helping out investigating a stuck brake pedal and decided to take 7 shots of it :?

So with that I had no choice but go and take the film to boots and used the 1 hour development option at how much

I picked up another roll of film and I will show you how it all scrubbed up next week once I have filled up that film and had it developed ;)

I will report on the brakes later today with those final 7 pics from this film.

Boy its hot ill be grad when I can give this a proper hose down when the hosepipe ban is over

So onto the dreaded sticking brake pedal.

It was suggested I remove the bolt that joins the pedal to the pushrod of the master cylinder and if the pedal didnt then move I might be lucky

So I did and the pedal moved immediately upon release from the master cylinder pushrod that was obviously seized.

I thought id drain the Master Cylinder but just couldn't get the lid off

I tried,Sam Tried and eventually my neighbour who is far stronger tried then cried out its turning :D

Well that was short lived when this happened

This is the outside of the cap that sheered off

Image

Image

And this is the inside of the cap holding on for dear life as if its been arch welded on :?

Image

So we decided to remove it completely for now

Image

Image

Its locked solid the piston in the bore is going nowhere :( I think even if I could get it out the bore is probably rusted like the Titanic!

It seems Girling no longer make them for Ford and now they are doing them in house and they now have a Plastic Reservoir because they found the lids welded themselves on to the all metal ones

You dont say

My uncles old business partner is going to look through the stuff that came from his garage to see if they have an original but I think a plastic replacement may be better? Apparently you can check the level without removing the lid

Whatever will they think of next?

Yes, the plastic is coming in quite useful nowadays isn't it? I also heard the other day that we can mix manufacturer's brake fluids together now as well. Doesn't sound right to me. There'll be man-made oil and brake fluid itself next...!

That's coming up nicely. Looks like your 35mm was a bit elderly, with a distinct lack of red..

Cleaned up well, crazed paint notwithstanding.

Yes, but I heard they’ll only be in the special coachbuilt version made by Ghia of Turin. Presumably this will be like the Mk3 Zodiac Executive and unfinished Cortinas will be taken to Italy to be hand finished by craftsmen. These will truly be the ultimate in luxury.

I'm not sure all this plastic is a good thing, is there a traditional bakelite option?
