Re: Sub Par Cars
Reminds me of when I had my MG Midget, every two years it'd throw all the fan blades away. No idea why as it never touch anything & I never heard them go. But it ran a lot better with a proper fan so I kept replacing it.

Re: Sub Par Cars
I definitely heard these ones go.
Somewhere on the back roads towards Crail I was going over a fairly uneven bit of road in 2nd and as I changed into 3rd I heard what I thought was a pop from the exhaust. Nope, was likely the fan eating itself.
No damage to the surrounding hoses or anything, but it definitely hit something or it was just the fact it was a shitty pattern part fan. I even found one of the missing blades hiding down in the front bumper.
I shall experiment with the 4-pot switch for the electric fan and see how it goes. It seemed perfectly happy sitting in the queue at Crail with the viscous fan removed and running its standard electric fan switch...
As said, in this case it seems to drive better without the viscous fan on the front of it. It feels like a much lighter, freer revving engine.

Re: Sub Par Cars
Aye you'd expect freer revving without a fan. The MG didn't like it as the airflow was needed to stop the petrol in the carbs boiling.

Re: Sub Par Cars
It should have a smaller four bolt fan, not that monster of a thing. They need the fan and the plastic cowling for proper cooling. Don't be one of those fan delete mongs, BMW fitted a fan for a reason.
Today on the way back from down South, I noticed the viscous fan on mine being a lot more vocal but it's not seized. Time for a new one.

The issue seems to be that the only 4-bolt fans I can find are the 8-blade ones for a 4-pot.The Reverend Bluejeans wrote: ↑Mon May 16, 2022 7:51 pm It should have a smaller four bolt fan, not that monster of a thing. Better than nothing, right?
Even the one GSF lists has two photos for the same part number. One photo shows 3 bolts, the other shows 4 bolts. Useful.
EDIT: I used RealOEM to get the part number from a 318is fan. It seems to be 11 blades and 4 bolts. It also yields results on ebay that match. Results like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/265694484074 which also says it fits M52s.
Re: Sub Par Cars
RBJ will be pleased to learn that I sourced a 4 bolt 11 blade fan from a local contact. Thus I have just done this:
I also tried driving the Civic somewhat gently for once yesterday:
That'll do.

Re: Sub Par Cars
I'll need to collect the car tomorrow first. Parked it up in a village 5 miles away and got a taxi home.

Re: Sub Par Cars
Anywhere tbh. E36 rads are a piece of piss to fit with just three hoses, two retaining clips and proper Jubilee type hose clips. Nissens are the best but the cheap ECP EIS ones are fine as well. Get the deeper automatic/AC type one, the equivalent of 17111728907.
Re: Sub Par Cars
Aye, I was comparing the dimensions of the A/C and non A/C ones on GSF. It seems A/C ones are taller. They have one by a company called AVA for £159. This car has A/C. Well, it's not hooked up, but it's there. The Reverend Bluejeans wrote: ↑Wed Jul 13, 2022 8:20 am Anywhere tbh. ECP just have a non A/C radiator listed.
The "problem" is that I'm going to Shitefest (I know, I'm a dirty treacherous so and so) so I don't want to order one too early, for it to arrive while I'm away. I'll hold off on placing an order until tomorrow afternoon, so it's guaranteed not to turn up until early next week. I have the next fortnight off work anyway. I am planning to go up to Aberdeenshire at the tail end of next week... hopefully in the 323i.
I know how easy they are, as I did one on the old 316i I had, in the street. As you say, undo the hoses and the clips at the top just lift off by hand and the whole thing lifts out.
EDIT: Or I can get a Nissens one off ebay for many cheaps. 440mm x 440mm one too, not the smaller one. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/293469173436
I googled the Nissens reference number for that and it comes up as the proper 440mm x 440mm on other places selling the same part number.
