I was beginning to get a bit bored with my polo. It sipped fuel;It was compact and handy for a street network penned by a monastic hands in the distant past. It proceeded without failing and was all round perfect transport.
Therein was the rub. It was boring. Following the demise of my beetle it also became my only transport.
Hence something had to be done. After browsing about in the usual places I decided a slightly worn Volvo v70 would fit the bill. 5cyl, 2.5 20v manual. I’d owned a T5 long ago; perhaps because of this the performance Is very underwhelming. And I’m not that fussy. Having said that it makes a nice noise and a leaky heater matrix has reared it’s head so it’s already proving to be more characterful than the polo.

Re: HMC motors- New shite (contains humid Volvo)
They are nice things, those Volvos.
I remember in the early '80s as a small car-mad child getting a brochure on how to choose the colour of your car from a Mercedes dealer in Manchester (Portmann, very snooty and off-hand). It was all about visibility and contained graphs and all sorts. Basically, it recommended bright orange.

A 2.5 20v with a manual box!
Volvo enthusiasts would be falling over themselves for that.
What caused the demise of the beetle if you don't mind me asking?

Re: HMC motors- New shite (contains humid Volvo)
It was a pretty ropey one from the off. It had a few bits of body damage. The DMF seemed to be making a lot of noise, the roof was a mess (although it still went up and down fine) at all the tyres were close to the limit. The clutch or the clutch hydraulics went on it. I decided to check out of beetle convertible ownership at that point. Cheap fun that was basically disposable.

I always thought the 2.5 20V was the best of the NA petrols in them, it felt a lot stronger than the 2.4 170bhp that replaced it. I won't mention the 2.4 140, as that was exactly like the 170 until about 3k rpm when it felt broken as it was fucked from the factory to slow it down.

A friend of mine had a V70 2.4 140 for a bit. He described it as having all the performance of a supermini with all the fuel economy of a luxobarge.Hooli wrote: ↑Sat Jul 10, 2021 11:37 pm I always thought the 2.5 20V was the best of the NA petrols in them, it felt a lot stronger than the 2.4 170bhp that replaced it. Why did they even produce that version? Was it for tax reasons or emissions?

Sales I bet, gave them a greater range of engines. The 2.4 140 & 170 replaced the 2.5 10v & 20v.

Try towing with one. It would barely pull its own weight and drunk like a fish.....much dissapoint.SubPar wrote:A friend of mine had a V70 2.4 140 for a bit. Not a lot to report presently aside from a nice 5 cylinder warble. And that leaky heater matrix. When set on cold it’s all rosy; but crank the heat up and steam comes through the dash vents along with a tell tale chemical sweet smell. I’ve had dodgy Heater cores before but this is a first with the whole steam out of the vents thing. It doesn’t sound too difficult to change the matrix.
I’ll probably do it if the car stays. It certainly sounds less complicated than on my Alfa 166 where K Seal was less hassle than taking the whole bloody dash to bits.
