Those wheel trims are a thing of beauty.

Top fact; my first experience of going vaguely fast in a car was in a burgundy one of these Astras. 1.4 Merit, with a small trailer on the back full of the old scouts canvas tents. I was in venture scouts, and my mate was a few months older than me so had his licence already. He got about 85mph out of it between Fyvie and Turriff on the A947, with the trailer on it.

My sister's last Astra was slightly newer than that one, Shhe had a Mk1 1600 estate, then a Mk2 1300 Merit Estate and then a diesel hatch like that. I preferred the Mk 1 as it felt the quickest. When my brother realised that she rarely drove the Astra as she preferred her Defender the Astra was sold.

IMHO, the Mk3 is "Peak Astra".

Back in 2006 I bought a K reg 1.6CD saloon of a member of my then girlfriend's family for £20 as she'd just bought a Mk1 Focus and her mechanic boyfriend couldn't get the brake lights to work. Two new bulbs and it flew through an MOT. Being a red, 14 year old Vauxhall, I had to get it machine polished which made it look like new. The only faults it had were an intermittently charging alternator, never fixed, I just carried a spare battery and jump leads, and a dodgy driver's side window regulator.

It met its end by being totally vandalised after I made the mistake of leaving it overnight in the Cantrill Farm estate in Liverpool whilst I collected a LWB Transit.

Bollocks to the misery guts dissing of this car. It’s genuinely really pleasing to see. It’s older than my Jag but looks so much more modern. I’d be proud to drive that around.

MK3 astrays do remind me of my youth, mostly about an ok looking ginger bird with massive norks who drove a metallic turquoise one.

I can't recall when I last saw an astray in the wild.

Although I say it's fine the way it is. It's got Vauxhall wheel trims on it, who cares?

I used E34 trims on my old E36 and had a few comments on them, and I just replied that I preferred them and it's my car. That shut people up.

I've always thought these are a clean, modern looking thing. Of course your Jag is from the last full year of its production and this from almost its first, but I know what you mean.
