Is the Pope Catholic ! They are a seriously fit looking motor but from what I remember they are even better at emptying your wallet than my Thunderbird. Which must of cost me at least a grand to do the 200 miles I have done so far.

It's been an utter nightmare getting to this point; for the first time since purchase it's a running and driving vehicle.
There are of course some snags still to deal with but it covered 300 miles last week more or less without incident.



If anyone is thinking of buying one I will of course try to answer any questions you might have; I know what's available, who can work on them without bodging them or lying, and what to run a mile from. I've decided I'll just be someone 'of use' here and occasionally the beige. Banging heads gets you nowhere.

A few things to know:

1. Yes, the styling was by Giugiaro.

2. No, the engine isn't the same as the six pot Legacy or Tribeca unit (that was the EZ series). The SVX used an EG engine, which, like the EA82 1.8 and ER27 in the XT6 before it, was basically Subarus current flat-four with two extra pots stuck on; in the EG's case, this was the EJ from the Impreza.

3. Yes, the autoboxes fail if they're allowed to get hot and rely on the programmed shift patterns specified in the ECU. The 4EAT was chronically under specified; fitting better internal or external cooling and swapping ECUs to change the shift strength prolongs their life.

4. No, I don't want to put a manual box in it. Converting it would be a pain in the arse, none of the parts are cheap here (unlike the US) and I don't want to row the ratios in a massive GT on my own, I couldn't give a flying fuck if tthe internet has decided manual conversions 'have to happen' to SVXs.

A few grand less. V6 Rover 800 coupes (or 'flobbery bags of crap') were more than SVXs.

SVXs were £28k in '91, XJS 4.0-litres were the region of £33k.

I tipped these for financial great-ness when they came out. I've always backed a winner, me.

Nice to see it again - they still look like concept cars a quarter of a century later.
