4.0 Discovery 2 trials & tribulations

Today I finally managed to get my Disco into the workshop to investigate its power steering fluid leak. Then if there was any time left over I'd planned to fit the new discs and pads I've had taking up space in the boot for the last 3 months. Shouldn't take long, my mate Josh was up for giving me a hand since I'd sorted out the electrical problem in his Fiesta last week.

Things started well, it didn't take long to trace the leak to the power steering pump. Attempts to tighten the hose couplings didn't solve it, so suspicion fell on the pump itself. Another mate Neil (a much more experienced Land Rover spannerer than I am) confirmed that a gasket in the pumps can fail, and the gasket isn't a service item. So what's a PAS pump going to cost, maybe £50 or £60? Nope... bend over & pay £112.00, with no lube. Ouch.

OK, I'll order one in the week & crack on with the discs & pads in the meantime. Things started badly when it became clear the tyre place that fitted & balanced my new(-ish) tyres had used the torque from the rotation of the earth to tighten the wheel nuts. Available breaker bars were bending worryingly, Garry the farmer (a Shogun owner, so I fully expect him to wind me up about unreliable Land Rovers) came to the rescue with a massive chunky breaker bar. OK, on with the job.

Things seemed to be going well again, Paddocks had sent all the right gubbins, all the bolts, etc. came out easily enough, and then Josh mentioned that the NSF hub felt a bit strange under rotation. He wasn't kidding, the bearing was utterly radged. WTF? I'd not noticed it AT ALL while driving. Another huge kick in the pocket too, Disco 2 wheel bearings are built into the hub assembly & are changed as a complete assembly. That'll be another £75.26 please.

I've now reached "Fuck it, go to pub" o'clock. Battle will recommence next Friday afternoon when the new parts arrive. And I'll take some pictures then too.

I had a 4ft breaker bar with a scaffold tube on the end bending massively before the wheel nuts on the van undid, when I had the latest tyres fitted I torqued them up myself, mind he couldn't get his head round the fact they were left hand thread on the nearside either....

I've ordered a new NSF hub that's boxed as the German brand "EBT". It could be finest Chinesium, but hopefully won't be as shit as Britpart.

I had to do the steering pump gasket on my td5 disco. The pump splits in half if I remember correctly. The pas pipe that runs along behind the bottom of the radiator likes to rot too. Don't do what I did and forget to tighten up the pulley bolts.

The wheel bearings come with the hub, so at least you don't have to press them in.

Other jobs to look forward to include:
Injector harness
Water pishing through the roof
Headlight bulb holders melting
Fuel filter leak
Three amigos
Chassis rot beside the fuel tank
....

I still liked mine though

Snap, literally when I broke a socket trying to free up these wheel nuts.

Well, I've done a bit of research into the PAS pump. Apparently it depends which seal is causing the leak - if the front seal has gone I'd need a new pump as that seal isn't available in the kits. And since my workshop time is limited I'll probably just buy a new pump for now & strip the old one down at my leisure.

I won't have to deal with the injector harness, mine's a V8 petrol ;-)
Water does occasionally pish through the roof, even though the sunroofs have both been sealed. TADTS, apparently.
Headlight bulb holders are a new one on me, I'll look out for that. Ta for the heads-up.
Fuel filter ought to be different on the petrol too.
Thankfully, my Disco has already had the 3 Amigos ABS unit cure.
I spent many hours chopping out rot & welding up the rear chassis about 16 months ago, I posted a thread about it on the beige IIRC.

And yeah, I like mine as well :-)

I've done that a few times over the years, I always use impact sockets if they'll fit now.
