Great to hear from ya, looks like you're keeping busy.

Is that coach thing a mobile cinema? I'm sure it's familiar from pics but can't quite recall what it is.

I scored very low on the autie test. I’m cheerful, happy, confident, like meeting new people, chatty and largely sociable. What the fuck am I doing on this forum?

sup DW'ers

yeah right that is all the 21c bolloxs out of the way. Lets get back to the 20c where I am way more comfortable...

It's been a while and a lot has happened, follow the yootoob channel for more up to date feedback but I would always come back here and entertain you with the non video updates.

Anyway, blue car is with it's new owner and being regularly spotted in and around north east lunnon. Dad's white car arrived back at his home in North Devon tonight with him successfully completing a 200 mile drive.

I have the books full of work until nearly June 2022, which considering I do no marketing and there is only one of me, make me a happy bastard - this is way better than working for a living.

Anyway enough onanism, after paint I still had to fix a couple of issues with the body frame on the 1972 body frame. This is the drivers side window lip under the sidey slidey glass. rotted out because someone went berserk with silicon sealer rather that allowing trapped water to drain away.

I fair few small patches had the lip back to original

As dad's car comes close to completion it is time to start on the 1982 Series 3 with a 200 tdi .... I know .... anyway 2 months on and all I can say is death trap! it will be fixed but whoever did the brakes should never be allowed to work on a car again.

Loom had burned out, mainly due to an 8mm metal stud in place of a fuse. the brakes had failed because someone had no idea how to flare a brake pipe. clutch is dead and rear axle is full of metal swarf. Aside from that, body is done, decent Exmoor trim hood and seats, chassis and bulkhead are new galv. nice

My Pa in law's yamaha keyboard went funny, possibly because he drowned the keyboard in wd40. Anyway, keyboard is here upside down. contact strip under the keyboard had failed under just 4 keys. bought another from a uk supplier and had it working again in 2 hours. Other folk would have binned it and bought a new one from the other side of the planet, delivered here on a vessel that does 1ft to the gallon. nice

Then I started digging into my dad's Range Rover engine. The carbs and inlet manifold were off for a long overdue rebuild. This gave me access to the camshaft and tappets. The cam was showing signs of aging so I opted (as I nearly always do) to swap it out for a new 3.9 cam and set of OE tappets. Alas when fitting and checking the tappet preload I found that the heads had been at some point skimmed mercilessly and as a result the preload was twice what it should be. guide is 40-60thou. this engine was 125-140thou. the impact was that the valves may not have been closing properly and certainly not quickly enough. head need to come off

all exhaust valves showed signs of fatigue (i know they always do but these were nasty) I reckon to a fair few mm being skimmed for some reason. The head gaskets fitted were tin, but composite gaskets would build the combustion chamber back up / slightly lower the compression ratio. Checked with realsteel and they agreed.

Valves just needed grinding back in. New composite gaskets and then re check preload... which was fine with a 30thou shim under the rocker pedestal. That brings it back into tolerance.

so

Dragged the "hulks" from the field. The idea was to possibly sell this proper 1972 matching number project which is the best of the lot. However lady fate farts in my face again, when I want to buy the price is high, when I want to sell it is worth more in parts. Hanging onto it for now

tucked the other 2 1971 and 1972 matching number cars into the barn lean too. They look happier

they were under a poly tunnel from a Norfolk company that sold it on the basis they survive Hebridean storms. North Devon storms are stronger it would seem.

My dad's engine responded to a carb rebuild and top end over haul with a persistent tapping tappet. It was faulty, fucking bastard supplier had swapped to non-OE without updating their website etc. Chineseium in the extreme. Then it also suffered a fuel overflow to the carbs that Noah would have winced at. Turned out that the fuel return pipe to the tank had started to collapse. Now replaced with kunifer and ethanol friendly flexible pipe. Running beautifully with tappets bought from http://www.realsteel.co.uk/ (no commercial link, just a happy customer)

Next up is the much fabled self levelling strut. When Land Rover proposed the range rover they wanted / demanded soft rear springs for occupant comfort. To allow for any load, including 4 Hooli types, they fitted the BOGE Hydromat self levelling unit to the rear axle A frame. This is it, needed a new pivot cover for the axle pivot but otherwise is 100%

Another customer had a RR lower tailgate that was in generally good order except for a couple of holes.

Range Rover - especially the classic has a weird aerodynamic in that what ever goes over the top of under the car generally gets sucked back in towards the lower tailgate. They suffer, badly! This one I removed the spots that held the rubber channel to the lower edge and the also the lower outer skin. Predictably little or no paint between the metal faces or should I say faeces.
