Land Rover Rustorashun

Post by richardthestag » Fri Sep 13, 2019 7:07 pm

Hey folks for those not up to date with my latest shenanigans I have a yootoob channel right here

https://www.youtube.com/user/richardthestag/featured?

It is most certainly demonetised

On the project front I finished the White 1972 project and then lost my fucking shirt on it at auction. I am quite irritated by that but at least the business has money in it to move forwards. The chap who bought it got a bargain.

I have 5 more wrecks that I am hoarding right now, unlikely that I will build another one out of my own pocket - but if I did it would be mechanically perfect and rust free then sold as an ongoing project for the next owner to paint as they wish and trim as they wish. I reckon there might be more margin going that way ;)

I persuaded my dad to buy a quite straight Series 3 pez 2.25l 109 Van from a chap at the pub, turns out to be not arf bad, needs brake refurb all round, work to the bulkhead, dash panels, doors and maybe paint. I have video on the channel of that work too.

In other news I am collecting other folks projects to finish, which is good as I am skint ish at the moment. One is a spanish LHD 3 door Range Rover 200 tdi, needs converting to RHD, have the comedy lift removing and tiding up while retaining all the patina - there is a lot of that. The other project is a mate of a mate who has a 92 Vogue SE that he wants to use for casual greenlaning and stuff. not to destroy but to have fun. Bit of a challenge for me as the car is quite tidy but still customer money is money. I cannot afford to have morals  These two and the 109 should keep me busy until the end of this year 8-)

It's a damn shame you lost out on the white Range Rover, you put a lot of effort into it.
On the road:
1998 Disco 4.0 V8 (manual)
1986 Honda CBX750F

Running but need fettling:
1994 Vauxhall Calibra 3.0 V6
1991 Maserati 222 SE
1990 Yamaha XJ900F
1982 Suzuki GSX1100SZ Katana

I've not been able to follow that story obviously but I'm surprised given the quantity of your work and the prices of those these days.

went to Silverstone Auctions end of july, estimate 45-55k bid to 30 :o
Feedback, paint wasn't like a brand new BMW, interior was basic, some of the unobtainium trim was the wrong side of tired

Sorted the paint, polished the fuck out of it, replaced door trims with a later style that were new £800
Lobbed it into Brightwells classic and 4x4 show 4 Sept ..... 23k :?

My reserve was 27.5 so a low estimate could be placed and interest would swarm in. their view this is a 40k car all day long. ffs

Juggling commissions and pushing the buyer got it to 27 and a bit but I lose 5% off that so fatha thestag walks with 25.5k for a car that has over 20k in parts and paint and over 1000 hours.

Root cause?
- fucking brexit and cunt mp's continuing to look after their own interests rather than those of the country. And I was a remainer for crying out loud! sick to death of the whole fucking shambles and the EU laughing at this miserable excuse of a country
- Jaguar LandRover and the reborn program - appears that after taking a 3.6bn loss last year JLR are cutting strings on things like reborn. nice umbrella that I was sheltering under with their 150k restored cars. yep all bullshity from what I can gather. projects are drip feeding back onto the market at 2k a pop
- oh and tarquin and spudulica preaching to their parents about our wasteful society and that every one should be driving EV. because power that comes from France is cleaner etc

Had I had the cashflow the plan was to hide the car away until next June - 50th anniversary of the cars launch. sadly that would have probably meant selling my stag and one of the other projects for cash to live off

Anyway, we live and learn 8-)

Can I ask if you are now restoring Land Rovers for paying punters? I loved following the Range Rover restoration and story to hear you lost out, but that too is my experience of classic auctions.

thank you, I enjoy making those videos but really do it to help others and inspire them to get on and do it themselves.

Yet I new have my own business, my only income now, mrs works also. Want to restore land rover products but kind of happy to accept any project from the right* customer (those who are interested in my level of knowledge and attention to detail) Folk who want a 45 year old car to drive like a new Audi are of less interest to me.

I've had my TD5 since 2008 when it was part-exchanged at 4 years old. It replaced a TD5 90 van which in turn replaced a 1990 V8 Disco with carbs. I've been paying various specialists to look after it, but as is often the case the 'specialists' mainly specialise in removed hefty waddes of cash for an amateur job. I'm particularly thinking of a recently bust, re-opened the next day under a slightly new name in Peterborough.

I've been offered a 90 station wagon (not an Offender) fitted with a TDi300 motor for restoration (bulk head gone and its been standing). But such a restoration is beyond me, especially since it needs PAS fitting. Its an interesting example as it was a factory skunk project by one of their chassis engines who has long since retired.
