I've fiddled with that, it might be better now.

I just mentioned it on the posting problems thread if you don't want to clog this one up.

Well mine is running better now but Prop is coming off at the weekend because it looks like the vibration problem may be driveshaft related?

Once thats sorted it will be in more regular service,i do have a hankering for a second helping but not a Mustang

The Mustang II is the only Wobbers choice its the underdog im not a fan of the whole "Mustang Scene" I like the fact I dont really fit in with my II ;)

Whatever becomes its playmate you can guarantee it wont be an airhead mobile

Cold War Motors thats where my head is,I want something that nobody else does :P

Right back on subject and lets get some content moved over here

Little Acorns as they say

I had been trying to obtain a Brake Pedal Rubber for quite some time but searching Mustang II drew nothing or sometimes a NOS unicorn for £70 for a brake pedal rubber!!!

Just about seen in this older pic its missing

Image

Pic seller sent me in 2017

Image

Whats that on the floor?

I had looked in all the boxes with the car nowhere to be found and besides i bet it had dried out and gone a tad loose?

So I sent a template off to a specialist old USA Ford guy over here in UK and today he has found one 8D

Image

Image

Only a little thing but will add the final touch in the footwell after the new carpet :)

And as if by Magic! Voila!!!

The Fender Bender Files!!

The Assesment

Even before I bought the car I was aware there was a fairly substantial dent in the rear offside quarter :(

I had been told when the previous owner bought it from the original farmer owner the farmer had removed it from its resting place with a fork lift :o

Looking at this first photo that seems plausable.

Image

But either I was told porkies or there was a previous Fender Bender before the car was even lifted?

Because near the Door/B Piller the extent of the dent doesnt look like fork lifting damage?

Image

Though I could be wrong?

As you can see the trim doesnt sit right with the rear quarter trim being lower than that of the door trim.......

I plan on removing this trim at a later date and replacing it with just trim that goes around the side markers like the one below

Image

My car is actually a base model which would of just had basic trim around the markers and these are upgraded trim.

The upgrade was done a the factory as it was a dealer demo when new so probably for upselling purposes?

But either way some are dented, some pitted and its hard and expensive to get a decent set these days :(

They are also a rust trap so going with the base look would be a cleaner look and easier to do in the long run.

For the purpose of getting everything to line up the trims are staying until the dent has been sorted as I can use them to line it all up :)

Once they line up the dent is strait in theory :|

Anyway back to the dent itself!

It looks like it was worse and was roughly beaten out?

I didnt realise until the last few days there was Bondo in there!

Its now started to Crack :(

Image

Again the trims aid as a guide to where the metalwork should be.

Image

Image

And Luckily I have decent access to the rear of the dents ;)

Image

Question is where do I go from here?

If you look at the photo showing the inside access hole there appears to be some sort of sound deadening in there I thing I may have to remove first?

I have wondered if it needs heat when its beaten out or just do it cold ? that crease looks quite sharp I am worried that might open up and split apart from that everthing else is doable I think?

Near to that crease there is a air flow vent in the B panel if you unscrew that you can get closer to the rear of the Dent/Crease ;)

Image

Plan is once its dry weather to powersand that rear quarter to bare metal to see how bad it is and remove the filler.

I think the dry climate its come from the filler will be dent related rather than rot though its starting to surface rust as the filler cracks..........

Once its bare metal I believe in learning by having a go and have been looking at some old decent used panel beating tools on fleabay rather than new cheap chinese shite.

Would be grateful for advice..............

Do you think this is something I can get better with only need for a thin skim of filler or do I need a bodyshop?

I did think the crease near the door may need a stud welding and pulling but to buy a machine will probably cost as much as a body shop doing it?

Anyway thoughts guys and girls all advice on this dent will be gratefully received :)

Day 1 at the new office oh Joy of Joys

:?

Image

Must not poke at 44 year old Yank Beaters with a DA

Huge dent near the rear quarter window,I dont think that dent was from the original damage though I think if in a vain attempt to knock out the wave from impact further down the panel the Inevitably dented it?

Image

Sanded in the general area of the high spots

Image

And dug out some low spots

Image

Further up the fender on the crease line I havnt looked at this yet but I dont like the look of that cracking

More bondo is waiting for me?

Image

This is the worst bit Of the impact not sure how ill knock this out as its a sharp crease ???

Image

Just below that you cant see where they had drilled holes the old fashioned was to pull the dent but rather than weld the holes up just Bondo :x

Cant understand why theres soo much filler the metalwork is practically flat underneath, needs a few mm skim not a Half Inch

Image

It was getting a bit much to finish before Rain stopped play so plonked a bit of red oxide on the bare metal I had exposed and will contnue tomorrow

Image

Plan is to fully bare metal the fender then have a go at knocking out myself,if that fails cover it with weld though once the true damage without filler can be seen then let a proffesional do it ;)

Id prefer to though because im cheap!

Day 2,Continuing to make The Tea..........................

More paint off and more sanding discs died in the process!

Dont have a Grinder believe it or not :o

Should really get one,or at least a drill based flap disc?

But im stubborn!

The discs locally for the sander are horrendously priced so had bought a big bag of Chinese Specials at £12 for 100 assorted discs ;)

Only thing is the only grade that will touch the filler is 40 Grit!

There was only 8 in the box and now down to 2!

We will just have to see what happens?

Anyway first progress for the day all this lovely clean yet wobbly steel was uncovered

Image

You can now see all the holes that were drilled in order to pull out the dent on that lower section.

Of the bit stripped back if you go up from the letter V on the tyre you can see a hard vertical line of filler and that was to be stopping point for the day.

A close up of that reveals just hove much Bondo was slapped on,most of it not needed where a thin skim would of sufficed!

Image

Also it was decided that the upper stopping point for the day was to be the horizontal fender swage line but as the bondo came off discovered some tiny holes

Image

Its not clear if these are rust holes but think they were probably pulling holes and ive gone through as the Bondo tapers to a thin skim just there.

The bondo was cracked adjacent to these holes so some flash rusting had occured but it was minimal.

At this point the Sander was crying for mercy to it was off to the local for a pub lunch and refreshment :P

Upon returning determined that square if you like was going to be completed before the day drew to a close so set about getting the last bits of Concrete Bondo out of that section bar for that filling the original screw puller holes as opening them up will just let damp and moisture inside ???

Image

The dark red still looking wet square on the bottom right of the photo between the vertical hard filler line and the horizontal swage line is the bit that 99% finished!

Note the go faster Duck Tape Stripe! Only temporary incase it rains during me doing this? Those holes will be welded up properly.

Image

I say 99% because where the original side trim bracket is still bolted through the body need to figure out how to remove that and then sand the small bit hidden behind it but Im sure thats only a skim so no biggy ;)

Day 3 Better pop the kettle on...........................

Yesterday went well but not as well as one would of hoped :(

Its been a case of doing a bit in the morning until lunch time,Lunch, then a little until it goes dark.

Did the Morning shift then lunchtime the toilet valve decided to jamb open showinring our bathroom with lovely essense of Lavatrine!!!

So smaller update and today once the plumber has been out I might get another bit done?

Soooo.............

The lower right section now done attention was turned to the section above that.

Running out of my most aggressive discs decided to DA several spots on the extremities of The State of Bondo and soon found It was just burning through to several layers of paint and bare steel not Bondo on the top third of the C pillar and the rearmost third of the fender.

Needing some way of highlighting what needed to be looked at and what didnt so looked at what I had in the shed and found some clear in a can left over so did this!

Wow Mom and Pop I made my ride all shiny 8-)

In places

Image

Image

Image

Then set about getting the Concrete Wob out of the top right patch just below the rear quarter window!

Had hoped it would just be a skim but nope a quarter of an inch!

After about an hour this......................

Image

Eventually after around two and a half hours this was the stopping point for the day!

Image

This is the Close Up :)

Image

Again good clean steel which left me bemused as to why so much filler?

Again you can see the row of holes used to pull the dent,to the left of the holes there is a low spot that needed filling and just above that a high spot that needed shrinking.

Everything to the right of this is factory smooth and undistorted but yet had a Quarter Inch of Ye Good Ole Bondo!

I despair!!

Next!!!

Day 4! Finally light at the end of the tunnel! (And the suicide of a Sander R.I.P.)

So after much sandering and copious amounts of filler giving up its stranglehold of the Shitey Wobstangs fender we were onto the penultimate stage of Fender Bondominium stripping!

We reached this

Image

Right in the middle of the C Piller there was Silly Silly amount of filler around 3 quarters of an inch in the middle and yes that was filling a dent but if you look in the photo where is the dent?

Image

If you look very very carfully you may just see the shaddow of were it was?

While Sanding the dent filler with the Da there was a loud pop and the Bondo simply fell out and the dent unpopped itself :o

Hot sure if it was the heat from the sander or the car is related to Christine :?

Middle lower left to that dent there is a High spot and below that a low spot thats the only dents on that sanded section below the C Pillar despite the whole length of that section having wob plastered on it thick!

Image

I did think for a while the wing was worse than I had first thought because there appeared to be no bodylines and no wheelarch line but they were there under all that Bondo still intact with the odd little ping here and there but nothing to warrant them being buried in Bondo Mountain?

Image

Then the sander had decided it never signed up for such cruelty and decided Suicide was the best option

Image

So the work area was Panel wiped and then covered in a coat of Red Oxide and proceedings halted.

To end heres a Dark Wob recomendation never buy Simonize Red Oxide its like Nats Piss!

So it came to pass after much fiddlefettlerating of this pain in the bottom area..................

Image

And so could go to the ball!

Supplied with the vehicle when purchased Summit Racing Carburattory Device has been rejetted and the miserable piece of Poodle Doodle is running much nicer with much more pull!

It is no longer pebbledashing the concrete though I suspect the Rich condition is a tad to Lean now as its a bit more of an arse to get it to catch however once running its grand

I went to a local meet last eve thats normally packed but very few turned up but the quality of people outweighed the quantity :P

It was only when he was sandwhitched between a Ford Ranchero and Granada Coleman Milne Hearse that I realised how small a Mustang II is!

Image

I remained a little pissed off on route home as I couldnt go much above 60mph because I still cant locate the source of my vibration issues once 60 is reached?

New Hubs,Calipers,Bearings,Tyres and balancing and still it vibrates like a Rampant Rabbit at 60 ???

except I dont enjoy this................................

It has been suggested that my driveshaft could need a balance? or maybe the UJ's are past it?

Anyway have a video of my glorious neolithic Trico wipers working after months of messing to get them operational they are now playing with rain in the real world ::)

Apologies they are not Pentagraphic or similar, sorry I forgot you do not care of such things here
