Got the 205 back from the garage, it had the axle swapped, clutch cable, brake lines and a new exhaust. Now that the rear end is no longer rock solid the front end feels quite harsh and there's a clunk coming from the left. I think it would benefit from some new shocks and springs.

It was decided my recently purchased 504 would just go straight to the garage for mot work, I know the brakes are dodgy but not sure what else it might need.
I spotted the 504 on Gumtree advertised at £2800 so had a think about what I'd get rid of to justify spending the money on it and top of the list was the Subaru and the Mitsubishi.

I got £2400 for the pair and also sold a Daihatasu Terios I'd recently picked up for £400.


I also advertised one of the 305's for £400, unsurprisingly there's been no takers...

I briefly listed the Corolla for sale but pulled the advert after receiving a bunch of "best price" messages and wanting a billion photos.

Still on the fence as whether to sell it or not, it's a good reliable car and it's something a bit different but I still have quite a lot of cars, 14 at last count and could be doing with having about half of that figure. Same goes with the 205, had it for 2 years and it's spent most of this year sat unused. I think if it came between the 205 and Corolla I'd take the 205.

That 504 looks remarkably straight for one of them. The one I was involved with for a while has had to have a fuckload of welding, chassis legs replaced and the bed sides were in tatters.

Do the shocks and springs on 205s cause knocking? I'm only asking as you seem to have at least a bit more experience of 205 than I do.

Mine is clunking sometimes. It's far better than it was now that it has the new wheel bearings and lower arms, but there's still a clunk when coming on or off the 'power' or going over bumps. My guess is an engine mount.

That 504 looks absolutely brilliant though!

That forecourt shot is brilliant - like the day before an early 90s fuel tax increase.

The drop links are notorious for wearing and knocking, treat them as consumables, the strut top mounts can seize on old pugs causing a clang when steering. If coming from the rear and there's a thud, thud, thud going on during breaking it'll probably be the rear beam mounts.

That's if it's not an engine or gearbox mount of course. Can you get someone to watch the engine while you raise the clutch with it in gear with the handbrake on? Forwards and reverse.

I've never known a car that you can do that yourself with the bonnet up & slouched in the driver's seat to look under the back edge of the bonnet.

A lot of cars aren't known to you then, besides, not everyone can slouch into the perfect viewing position like you can...
