Aye - prior to that (was that late 70's?) the definition was 50cc and had pedals that could be used to propel it.
My 1974 Honda SS50 used things that looked like bike pedals for footrests - and there was a mechanism you could use to pull one out and make it into a pedal crank that would indeed pedal the bike along.
All other controls were as per a motorcycle - handlebar clutch, 4 speed foot operated gearbox.
At this time a C50 grandad bike wasn't a moped and needed at least a provisional bike licence to ride - but there was also no CBT and you could ride on L plates forever.

It was around then. I had a '77 Honda Camino PA50 and it could be pedalled if the lever on the rear hub was engaged.

Seems the press cannot distinguish between an actual 50cc moped and a 530cc Yamaha T-Max.

I don't think I ever read a press report on the two wheel mounted phone snatchers and the smash and grab gangs that didn't describe a (110mph capable) T-Max scooter as anything other than a moped.

I remember being on holiday on the Isle of Wight a few years ago. Mooching around Godshill, I happened across a gaggle of (admittedly immaculate) pedal-equipped Garellis parked outside the tea room.

Five unlikely-looking middle-aged, slightly overweight, fellas came out with crash helmets and seasoned biker wear and proceeded to start them up in the time-honoured centre-stand Pelaton mode. Holding back my mirth I asked what the crack was.

"Oh we haven't ridden all the way from Essex - chucked 'em in a van and we're just using them round the Island while we're camping" explained the ringleader.

"Guess you won't have too far to walk when they shit themselves, then" I replied.

"It's not just that" he said. "No bastard we know will see us riding them here...."

The c90s I owned were hilarious fun. Capable of over 50 but could be kept pinned around the Derbyshire lanes. I much enjoy keeping a small capacity on the boil to get the most from it. Anything bigger and you can't use it to it's full potential anymore.
