I've never really understood why they haven't gone ballistic in price like it's Ford's and BMWs competitors of the time have.

I wonder how much it affected Dolly image and hence values having the sibling 1300/1500 models re-badged (or even offered at all). If there was only ever the 1850/Sprint it might have been a different matter......

No the piston seal is below it. That's all there is.

I know there is a seal below but what is that grove in the middle for, if not for an o-ring?

Correct. They were a lot better and especially better looking.
I always wonder why people seem to have forgotten just how incredibly shit Fords and especially BMWs of that era were. But as has been said, the degree of shitness has no, or even a positive influence on classic car prices, see Shitrun DS, She Type, the 190 SL and Dubs.
