Yeah, as the cars got bloated there was space at the bottom for something about the size of the original polo/Audi 50.
It actually easily fits into a normal parking space yet is fine on 250 mile plus runs, as we found out when my galaxy got interior paddling pools.

I had a Mk2 Polo years ago, it was about the right size for a sensible small car. It also had stop/start in 1984 (Formel E trim).

They were nice cars, like the early golfs.
And we now have nissan pukes and qashquais...
You could also see out of cars of that era, no need for crap like a camera instead of a rear view mirror like on the latest Evoque.

You mean rustbuckets? They were just as bad as Ford Kas for shitting their rear quarters round the fuel fillers.

Yeah, I remember seeing a newish mark 1 golf with pretty bad rust.

But most cars were like that then although Datsuns were the worst as far as I remember. The most rust resistant car I had at that time was a mark 1 Opel ascona voyage estate but otherwise it was a nightmare with an automatic choke solex.

You just accepted that your weekends were taken up with fibreglass, filler and then waxoyl to try and slow down it dissolving.

I had a stone chip in the windscreen of the Jaguar. I called out the insurance company's official repairer, Autoglass I think. The shortest bloke in the world arrived, stretched himself over the bonnet and declared that the chip was too big for him to repair and the best course of action would be to wait until it spread & broke and then have the screen replaced.
Obviously I turned to ebay and bought a repair kit for £3.50. It was totally straightforward if a little time consuming waiting half an hour for this & half an hour for that... Because I'd been studying the repair & the chip all afternoon, I could still see my repair when it was complete, but a couple of days later when someone asked me about it, neither of us could find it.
For three & a half quid, I'd recommend giving it a go.

My lad used one of those o his Mini I told him not to bother, but he insisted and it was actually a pretty good repair. No idea how well they last as a couple of weeks later it got hit again in a different spot and cracked. Autoglass are a fucking rip off as they wanted £160 for a repair. My local screen company fitted a new screen for £120.

Thanks.

I'm just waiting for the youngest to get back to me to say whether there's an excess to be paid on a chip repair.

If there is I'm sure that it'll end up being me fixing it, it'll turn out to be a 'dad' job while him and the missus jibber-jabber over what's being going on since he was last home.
