Eddie Honda's wheels of steel (and occasionally alloy)

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

Either I posted this before and it disappeared, or more likely, I had it all typed out and technocripplely closed a browser tab after a preview instead of hitting submit

1987 MODEL YEAR LAND ROVER 110

Ok, for reasons, I've been roped into looking at the brakes on a landy. It supposedly wouldn't budge, but somehow it made it with great reluctance in low to somewhere undercover.

The main problem appeared to be the transmission handbrake being jammed up. This was confirmed after removing the rear prop.

After winding back the adjuster I was able to peek inside.

Rather dusty, but original looking riveted shoes. Expander mechanism stuck...

Didn't bother looking at the offside front as I ran out of time. I've done a list and put in some orders. Hopefully they won't take too long to turn up and I can return to this. Besides the brakes, I think the main issue for a CVRT pass is going to be oil leaks...

I used to rebuild the transmission brake once a year for the MOT and it'd die a week or two later after getting wet. Bloody useless things tbh.

R1100RT UPDATE

Overfueling and often running like a turd most of the way getting to Glasgow from Dublin. Had to refuel at a new low of 227 miles on the trip (usually makes it to 270). Problem is with the oil temp sender or wiring as I loose the oil temp display on the dash when it does it and then ECU thinks the engine is cold. Nursed it here and will look into it eventually.

TOMMY'S JAAAG UPDATE

Things went well yesterday despite lack of sleep in order to catch the early boat. Got the heater return pipe replaced and the nearside door mirror changed.

Rust hole was here:

Door mirror was bought cheap last trip and matches with perfect end scuff and lacquer peel to blend in with the rest.

Belt started smoking like a cunt after starting it and then realised the alternator was seized because fucked bearings. So bending over for that as I didn't get cheap one in advance. Tommy should be back with it in a while.

Indeed. Despite getting the bits, I've avoided fixing his Pajero and hopefully the guy wanting it for quality used spares will be back round to pick it up before the DVLA catches up with it.

TOMMY'S JAAAG UPDATE... continued

EARLY GAINS THURSDAY:

Needed some antifreeze (and lots) local because Jaaag apparently takes 12L dry.and 10L on a change, so three x 4L.

Quick check of nearby usual suspects.

Screwfix only does 1L bottles and Halfords is just Halfords.

Thought I'd check Tosco, in case, as they're near.

That's better, but wait, EVEN BETTERER wiv clubcard! So we head ok down in his Jeep. On the way down, I express doubts about my clubcard and he doesn't have one.

My doubts are confirmed at the customer service desk - Tesco Paddyland cards don't work in the UK/NI. So how do I get a clubcard pronto? Wifey says 2 minutes registering on the app. Download that and try to register. The get told I can't because I already am. Ok, forgot password. Reset that and get in. See ancient addresses - must be at least 15 years since I've used it. Still, I'm not fucked about this data hoarding as the QR code scans at the self service checkout and I've SAVED £28.05 and earned 28 clubcard points.

Things then went from ok to bad on Friday

Before Tommy left he had been speaking to the pikey scrap car hunter (who he had bumped into on a couple of previous occasions) about the Pajero and he was on this occasion was prepared to flog it. Matey said he'd be back with a trailer in about an hour and a half. Tommy had a couple of appointments on Friday afternoon so had to go out and was going to collect the Jaaag alternator from ECP.

This left me waiting in for Steptoe and he didn't turn up. Tommy was delayed over car park machine issues and ECP was just closed by the time he got.there.

The pair of us were raging and got fuck all else done that evening on the motors..After eats at 7.40pm we dash round to get some 2 core to.sort his bottom of the stairs light. I only need 15cm, but have to buy 5m. Can't think of any old school places that sell it off the roll.

Backstory: This light is above the front door on the inside at bottom of stairs. Lower batten holder got broke and shorted taking out the whole lighting circuit. New batten holder bought, but I couldn't fit it as upon removing the hatch at the bottom of the stairs the current batten holder is plugged into the previous batten holder and the short flex was crumbling being ancient.

SATURDAY IMPROVEMENT

After getting fuck all sleep and not catching up on the boatlag, I was again up early doors on Saturday to get this alternator. That went okay and then Brian called as I was.leaving there and offered to drop the moby off.

After getting the Geordie Mario phone and blethering to Brian for a bit, I got back to work on the Jaaag.

Out with the old

This job really annoyed me, mainly because of the conflict between price and needs. If I were at home,.I would have got the bearings for less than a tenner and fitted new bearings. But I was boxed-in because it was a Thursday night before I knew I needed one and miles away from my mancave facilities. I wasn't going to chance it ordering something Fri where the Saturday delivery doesn't happen or too late in the day (the £110 option). The guaranteed option was in stock at one ECP branch was £234 even after kid-on discounts. It's a good job it's Tommy's car and not mine.

At 15:15 on Thursday, I ordered a fresh 019 battery. Arrived 13:18 Friday. A big-up to Tayna Batteries (again).

Out of interest what did the 018 battery cost? Best I've found around here is £124. Although I've not got the boot open to confirm the size yet.

019 battery, it's 354 long (x190h X 175w)

£114.72 delivered for that Varta. (£104.99 + £9.73 delivery)

Here's their list. £66.95 to £133.52

https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/types/019/

You could also fit a 017 in there, they are the same length & width (footprint) but 175 tall. https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/types/017/ £57.75 to £105.36

(The 018 you mention is the 019 with the terminals the wrong way round.)
