Eddie Honda's wheels of steel (and occasionally alloy)

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

I have been scanning some old photographs. You know, the thing you always intended to do, but didn't bother because there was a load of crap sitting on top of the scanner lid and something infinitely more interesting to do like chasing women or beerage to be had.

I'm not 100% on the dates unless I bothered to write more than the approximate month on the back of the photos way back when they were processed.

First up a 1972 Hillman Imp "BASE" acquired as spares or repairs for £40 - around July 1989.

My brother's first Hillman Imp, a 1974 Super.

And a car belonging to a friend of the family. A 1964 Austin 1100. One of the cars I later learnt to drive in. The owner's father had it since 1965 and never took it out in the rain. Note the giffer ownership details.

The super and 1100 look really nice. The spares one though shows how bad rot could be. Not many 2003 card for like that today. It's the computers that kill them!

The 1100 was really nice. It had, up until around then, still the delivery plastic on the rear seats. Giffer-wise, if you look closely you can see the strip of the wood on the battery strap, the carpet offcuts in the front footwells and the blue paint that was all over the engine.

Also notice the early-formed habit of driveway ornaments such as the hanging 1972 Austin 1300 Countryman Mk3 (£20 bought locally) between the garage and house.

Had a courtesy phone call yesterday from Footman James about a renewal of a multi-vehicle policy.

As I haven't been near the post for about 6 weeks, I haven't see it in print, but apparently the renewal in the region of £650. W. T. F. ? Trying to pinpoint the leap in premium was a bit elusive although they were some mumbling about a new "minimum premium" or something. There was also some mumbling about being able to override it in instances of existing policies.

So what the fuck is going on here? (Apart from the Johnny Ball "Think of a Number!" random insurance premium generator)

To recap, last year I was shifted from a Classic Car (CC) policy to a Multi-Vehicle (MV) policy because number of cars:

1) 1969 Reliant Regal 3/30
2) 1982 Volvo 343DL
3) 1986 Reliant Rialto 2
4) 1987 Volvo 340DL
5) 1992 Citroen BX19 TXD
6) 1998 Peugeot 306 Cabriolet

The (No. 6) cabriolet addition at renewal exceeded the 5 cars max of the CC scheme. The CC policy the previous year was unlimited mileage. The MV scheme was £291.38 for 10k mile pool limit or £385-odd for unlimited. I chose the 10k option.

6 weeks into the policy I added No. 7 and an additional named driver:

7) 1996 Jaguar XJ6

which incurred a premium of less than £12 + £25 admin (It was £36.20 altogether)

Then 7 months in I added No. 8:

8) 1996 Citroen Synergie

This was rated at a "modern" vehicle and cost £130.48 to add until the end of the policy.

So for 2019/2020 insurance season, it's cost £50 in admin and £408.06 in premiums. (£458.06 Total)

Is it the Synegie? Well that's on SORN at the minute and some have been moved around, so I go about taking some off and asking for a re-quote:

1̶)̶ ̶1̶9̶6̶9̶ ̶R̶e̶l̶i̶a̶n̶t̶ ̶R̶e̶g̶a̶l̶ ̶3̶/̶3̶0̶
2) 1982 Volvo 343DL
3̶)̶ ̶1̶9̶8̶6̶ ̶R̶e̶l̶i̶a̶n̶t̶ ̶R̶i̶a̶l̶t̶o̶ ̶2̶
4) 1987 Volvo 340DL
5) 1992 Citroen BX19 TXD
6̶)̶ ̶1̶9̶9̶8̶ ̶P̶e̶u̶g̶e̶o̶t̶ ̶3̶0̶6̶ ̶C̶a̶b̶r̶i̶o̶l̶e̶t̶
7) 1996 Jaguar XJ6
8̶)̶ ̶1̶9̶9̶6̶ ̶C̶i̶t̶r̶o̶e̶n̶ ̶S̶y̶n̶e̶r̶g̶i̶e̶

So with those four left, it comes down to around £450. FFS. I insured five (1-5) a couple of years ago for only £190. The policy apparently changed from limited 10k to unlimited when I put the Synergie on (I was told Friday on the phone, but checking the paperwork it hadn't), so what if I limit the pool? No difference, still £450.

Looks like I̶'̶l̶l̶ Tommy will just be insuring the Jaaag this year (the other three can stay on SORN). Surely I can get that done for a £150 or less?

Some of you avid readers will recall I previously welded a broken exhaust flange on the yellow Honda Jizz @107,445 miles.

With it being St Patrick's day yesterday, I'm pleased to announce that my quick and dirty bit of welding that I did is now 2 years old (+25,247 miles) and is still hanging on in there. As such, I still haven't bothered my arse replacing the original exhaust backbox.

Following on from my last rant about the Johnny Ball renewal figure from FJ. I went for a final quote. Slightly hampered by the fact they're working from home, etc. I thought I'd make this dead simple: scrub everything but the Jaaag and put it on SDP only (for some reason the last cert had "commuting" on it) and limit it to 3k miles.

1̶)̶ ̶1̶9̶6̶9̶ ̶R̶e̶l̶i̶a̶n̶t̶ ̶R̶e̶g̶a̶l̶ ̶3̶/̶3̶0̶
2̶)̶ ̶1̶9̶8̶2̶ ̶V̶o̶l̶v̶o̶ ̶3̶4̶3̶D̶L̶
3̶)̶ ̶1̶9̶8̶6̶ ̶R̶e̶l̶i̶a̶n̶t̶ ̶R̶i̶a̶l̶t̶o̶ ̶2̶
4̶)̶ ̶1̶9̶8̶7̶ ̶V̶o̶l̶v̶o̶ ̶3̶4̶0̶D̶L̶
5̶)̶ ̶1̶9̶9̶2̶ ̶C̶i̶t̶r̶o̶e̶n̶ ̶B̶X̶1̶9̶ ̶T̶X̶D̶
6̶)̶ ̶1̶9̶9̶8̶ ̶P̶e̶u̶g̶e̶o̶t̶ ̶3̶0̶6̶ ̶C̶a̶b̶r̶i̶o̶l̶e̶t̶
7) 1996 Jaguar XJ6
8̶)̶ ̶1̶9̶9̶6̶ ̶C̶i̶t̶r̶o̶e̶n̶ ̶S̶y̶n̶e̶r̶g̶i̶e̶

They came back to me with a quote of £327. Now apparently if I ditch the legal and recovery elements it'll lower it to around £227...

This is baffling - after 16-odd years of relatively sensible premiums, WTF has happened in the insurance game to send these premiums sky-rocketing?
