Eddie Honda's wheels of steel (and occasionally alloy)

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

Pissed about today and didn't get much done.

First the bonnet lock wouldn't take the key. The bonnet is bollocksed anyway, both hinge holes are fucked, so I thought I'd fire some Liquid Spanner that I found in the shed.

The previous owner obviously had a bonnet rattle to cure and had some hosepipe handy

Then took a look at what adaptor I'd need for the wiper blade and check how long it is. 14" / bayonet.

Cleaned out the battery recess. Now these cars have tiny batteries. Supposedly a 104 which nobody does anymore. A good contender is a Jizz battery (054), bar the fact the terminals need to be at opposite ends (055) and that they are tiny JIS ones, so I dug out my fucked Halfords version of a 054 to have a look. It wasn't going in. I got a Lidl Dremel type thing out and shaved the plastic ridges off the ends at the bottom.

IMG_20211009_153424_resized.jpg

That doesn't look right. It needed further investigating. On paper, the 054 is nominally 187mm long, but the base of it is as good as 180mm. But having got a tape down in there a couple of things become apparent. The tray is sort of 180 x 140. It tapers in towards the bottom. Also that fucking tray isn't a proper rectangle either. FFS.

Shoved some card down there to check

So not only does the tray taper from top to bottom, it also isn't rectangular and tapers a few mm in towards the engine. Great.

It really needs to sit in right down on the GRP ledge as those Jap batteries are 227mm tall and I can just about squeeze it in under the bonnet, but not if it's sitting on a riser. Having studied the batteries from various suppliers in the size range, I came to the conclusion that Yuasa do something usefully smoller. Doesn't matter that the terminals are the wrong ends as it's not like I'm going to short the battery off the bodywork.

I could nick the Odyssey PC680 AGM battery out of the RT and stick that in. It's a good bit smaller but more than twice the price.

I took the 063 out of the 306 (the 027 battery that actually belongs to it is a bit fucked) and hooked it up to see what wasn't working.

Well both headlamps dip and main work, as does the wiper motor. The oil pressure warning light works as does the main beam warning light. They are all unfused. Nothing else does, which probably means I've got a wire hanging off the back of the ignition switch and/or the fuse box wants cleaning up. A number of switches are hanging out of the dash. Can't remember why as I think everything was working when I parked it up.

This box of quality used tricycle spares arrived long before the car got shipped over, with the intention of overhauling them to take back. As usual with these sort of plans, they go Pete Tong.

They all belong to the trike, but I've no idea why I have 3 extra inlet manifolds. :?:

I checked the hose in the box and it's Codan J30R6. Looking at the specs it's supposed to not melt at the first sniff of ethanol. I will monitor the situation as we still get E5 at the pumps here.

Woke up at 12.20 and fumbled for the moby to ring the motor factors. Ordered battery and told it would be in for 4pm.

In the meantime I rolled some fuses round the fusebox and got taillights, OSF side light and I noticed the clock ticking, but still no indicators or hazards. At least there aren't too many to worry about in the Joe Lucas 6FJ

Wandered down the motor factors on the way to work and picked up 1 smoll battery and 1 smoll wiper. The battery only has smoll JIS posts, but I have some SAE collars saved from another battery. Wanted a Bob Bosch wiper, but they only had 13" or 15", plus they only had hook ones. So ended up with another brand (never heard of them) which was available in a 14" and had a hook/bayonet combo adapter, hopefully it'll fit.

It seems the correct battery is a 104, or certainly was when the last Reliants rolled off the line. Nobody seems to do them any more. The battery I took out (10+ years ago) was another smoll one. Again, I think a 047 is another obsolete size. Fuck knows how people get 054/055 batteries to fit in their tricycles.

No, I'm on short weeks this month. I had 9 days annual leave to take before the end of November. I'd already taken 16 this year as because of The Covid™ (I had rolled over 5 from last year). I'm not rolling over yet again, so have gone for 4 x 3 days weeks this month to use 8 days up.

Now I'm supposed to be sorting stuff in Carlisle - including the Shitroen Synergie - but I've got to get there first. Typical October weather isn't great and taking a motorcycle rather limits the carrying capacity. So the cunning plan is to recommission this after some 13 years off the road.

Have you had it running recently. My metro would stand for a few years and fire straight up no bother.
I've never experienced stale fuel. Is it even a thing?
