Which cars have good/bad aircon?

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

On our honeymoon, we were driving this:

With the roof down, air con on, in this temperature:

Which works out as:

The chiller worked very well, despite the intense heat. We set off from Vegas where it was already between 38-42c, however the temperature in Death Valley is just another level. It may only be 6-8 Celsius more, but that made all the difference in how much more intense it felt. 40c is the limit on which your core body temperature should be. If you are fit and healthy, you can just about withstand that temperature outside, even if it's pretty unbearable. However add another 8 degrees on, it starts to become even so much harder to handle.

So why did we have the roof down in such conditions and consuming even more environmental resources by doing so? Because it felt right in the land of excess ... Because America

47 degrees? FFS! That's even warmer than it was in my garden yesterday.

Toyota have been mentioned a few times above for having super aircon (apart from when it's bust). Does that mean that a Lexus is going to have super dooper aircon (which will subsequently break and cost a fortune to repair)?

Presumably prestige stuff like Jags and S-class Mercedes have nice frosty aircon, or is it always knackered by the time scum like us get to own them?

My Jag XJ40 has excellent aircon - much better than an E91 BMW we also have here. It produces such a volume of cold air. It measurably increases fuel consumption when it's on though, so maybe that's why modern systems often seem so weedy.

IIRC Jaguar used an American air conditioning system (Delanair) - so maybe that's why it works! The Yanks have always been good at A/C in cars.

My 2011 Volvo has icy cold aircon, but The system in my missus' bini is hopeless and its 3 years younger. It's a waste of time her having it anyway as she likes the heating to be a furnace level and all directed at her feet whatever time of the year it is. My old Passat (2006) has good cold aircon, but it likes to choose what vents it uses seemingly at random.

Is it anything to do with the EU banning the refrigerant that used to be used in aircon?

Wow, beaten by a degree! This was the mid afternoon temp in the cane-fields of Savannakhet, Laos. Made worse by the fact we were out in it, working in it and trying to remember to stay hydrated. You know when it is hot, as the locals put on a slightly thinner coat. At least you had air-con, our pick-up trucks all had a different style of air-con known as winding down the windows.

My Silverado has good aircon. Jeep isn't bad but really needs to be moving at a decent pace to clear the heat out of the engine bay.

Renault has modest aircon, but that uses R12 which kills nuns and kittens. Newer refrigerants don't work well in older systems because of the pressure differentials required, that's where that myth comes from. Modern refrigerants in a system designed for them work really well.

A few summers back it got up to 125F here. Working outside in that was just plain uncomfortable.

That must be one of the understatements of the year
