Which cars have good/bad aircon?

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

Which cars have good/bad aircon?

Post by Dead_E23 »

I recently spent a load of money getting a new aircon compressor and evaporator put in my mk4 Mondeo in preparation for summer. It is much improved, but still unimpressive - which is a pity, because it does everything well apart from that.

Typically, the aircon in my worthless mk3 Mondeo works brilliantly by comparison and has not required a penny to be spent on it. Fucksticks!

When it worked, the aircon in my E23 7 series BMW was icy cold, to the extent you had to direct the vents away from the steering wheel to avoid frozen hands. I haven't experienced really cold aircon in any modern cars; presumably R12 is a much better refrigerant than R134a, either that or they're fitting puny systems to improve fuel economy.

Are there any modern cars with really freezing cold aircon?

Which other cars have shit aircon like my Mondeo?

The aircon in the Saab 9-3 I had was unbelievable, whole motor was like an icebox with it on. Definitely the best I've had in a car.

The brand new cars I've had, qashqai, Octavia and ioniq have all had decent AC but the ioniq is by far the best. Older cars with Decent AC were a 53 plate vectra,54 plate Kia carens and a 98 mk1 avensis. The avensis was fantastic.

I think the best aircon I've experienced has been in mid-2000s Fords.

Sounds an interesting idea. I replaced it not so long ago, so it is at least a clean one. Does binning it completely make the air colder, or just more of it? I don't generally run the fan at full speed as it is.

My Saab had weak aircon. After doing a bit of reading it'll have been down to not changing the dryer when I got it regassed.
If the gas is damp it loses its heat transfer properties. Which explains why it was ice cold for a couple of mins and then got slightly warm.

The Jag is pretty damn good but I'm thinking of getting it regassed anyway as the compressor seems to clunk too much when it kicks in and out. A proper gas change also changes the compressor oil as it's held in suspension within the gas.

My Avensis T25's climate was the best I've ever experienced, my current A3's is ok but a bit crap in comparison, worst one I've had is the brand new panda I'm hiring whilst in Spain, its crap and the ambient temps are 38 today.

American cars I've found have the best Aircon, but there's none I want to buy or can afford currently.
