My company XR3i only lasted 6 years, even though I had mine at the grand old age of 21, it still got driven foot to the floor for every ( unrecorded ) mile, it was leased so I ran with the speedo cable disconnected. It was a full maintenance deal and the lease company refused to pay for tyres and brake pads after a year. I left the company after having it for 18 months, when it was showing less than 10,000 miles.

When I was 19 I became a chauffeur overnight , the night the Creative Director put his XJ-S into a field next to the M4 , after seeing the 1 mile sign for the Reading junction and turning left! His subsequent 12month ban opened up what has been my career to date.
My first chauffeur car was UPD 26X a six month old Granada 2.8 Ghia X. I was gutted it wasn’t an injection but loved it all the same, it was driven like you’d imagine a 19 year old, raised on The Sweeney and The Professionals, would drive it. I soon discovered that if I drove with the fog lights on that when you flashed to full beam the fogs went off and the spot lights came on… Charging down the fast lane with the lights alternating up and down cleared everyone out of the way, what an obnoxious twat I must have been.

Only lasted 10 years, interestingly it had become red at some point, it was silver when it was traded for a 735i SE in 1984.

I'd wager that "your" XR3i was stolen and burnt out as opposed to "mine" which probably rotted to death like most early MK4 Escorts.

IIRC, E985AVX was returned to the lease company with an incurable fuel injection fault meaning that it was only managing 12 MPG. It was replaced with a similar black E plate XR3i with begsy spec white trims. As our office was in Toxteth, the radio cassette was stolen within 7 days. Come to think o0f it, the only company XR3i we had with alloys was a D plate example in white used by the sales supervisor, John Hanley.

I just checked up on the first Morgan I owned. It has not been taxed since I sold it in 1985. Although it has changed hands since as the last V5 was issued in 2009.

It was pretty ropey so it could be going through a never ending rebuild, or possibly being used as a racing/competition car and not on the road.

Very few of my old cars have survived,my old Volvo 1800E UXC8J is one of them as is my '61 Impala AOY696Y. My RHD '58 Belair is still around, used to be VXO9 but one owner took the plate off it. My '58 Chevy Yeoman 2-door wagon is alive and well in Finland possibly driving Santa around :-)

The top one was taken in Hawick in 1985, me and 3 mates lived in the XR3i for 4 days and nights following the RAC Rally. In those days not only did spectators race each other like idiots , you could also race competitors on the road sections between Stages.

The others are from the following Easter, my boss suggested that if I wrote it off she could get out of the lease and I could use a Saab 900i from her boyfriends company. As I was agenius I loosened the wheel nuts after a service and drove flat out around a big roundabout…
It didn’t get written off! Although I did use the Saab for a few weeks.

I thought I'd look up a truck I used to drive in late eighties. It's a Renault R340 32 tonner. When I had it, it was painted in the light blue Maersk Line colours. It was a brilliant motor, I used to have 5 nights a week out in it, so comfortable. Not been used since 1994. Last used by the company I worked for in 1992 when the company went bust. By the time it was sorned, it had been painted orange.

oddly the Rover 820 i had is still about, though the MOT is about to expire.

i let that one go for a couple of hundred quid cos the outer sills were shot, only later did i find out that Owners Club had made some up for a reasonable price.

this one i DO regret selling it.....

i guess you live and learn. apparently.
