Could it be that the bonnet release is buggered and it's put at the front to stop it closing properly?
Looking at the first pic it's still slightly open.

Both those Wolseleys give me the lob. A fucked Wolseley six recovered from Bilgewater Somerset, WCPGW.

I reckon the tennis ball is to put onto the bonnet catch whilst working on the car to prevent any unpleasant head injury.

First thing I did on that 1100 was remove that darn bonnet catch. Bloody thing really hurts when you hit your bonnet against it.
