Good point, I'd forgotten the Edwardian single cylinder jobbies.

Mind you the Merlin engined rolls was supposed to be quite a car.

That's diesels for you. Progress with a nice fat 4 cylinder petrol is just more enjoyable.
Hmmm, that's subjective. For example, I'd certainly take a diesel-engined Discovery over a petrol-engined one for off-road use. And on-road use tbh, if fuel economy* is a factor.
Merely comparing ancient petrols with ancient diesels. I'm pig-fucking ignorant about anything from this century and trying keep it that way.

Fascinating are those Lampredi Ferrari 857 and 860. The latter has 3432cc. It was used in the 1956 Monza with two Weber 58 mm carburettors and had 280 PS. These cars placed first and second at Sebring and came second and third at the Mille Miglia that year. The sound of them is just fucking epic.

Me too - the last Disco 300 TDi rolled off the production line over 20 years ago :-)

I don't know much about the more modern ones tbh.
On the road:
1998 Disco 4.0 V8 (manual)
1994 Vauxhall Calibra 3.0 V6

Running but need fettling:

1991 Maserati 222 SE
1990 Yamaha XJ900F

Here's my 300tdi; obviously the turbo has been whipped off in the interests of a fair comparison with the magnificent 5 bearing 2.5 petrol I have in my Rover 75.

Power and performance is about the same but petrol pulls smoothly from a few revs in any gear, very helpful if slippery. Costs me the same at the pump until LPG becomes unavailable which may see John F win in the end...

(Must add that TDi with all its bits will break a series layshaft and lots more besides)

There was no 450SL until 1973, and this has almost certainly never been white.
