I took the cam cover off my 14 to fix a leak on the RH front corner.

It was rude not to check the valve clearances while in there, still within spec & only 250miles off 160k having never been touched. Then one of the threads stripped on the RH back corner as I was putting the cover back on, as I didn't want to take it all off again having just sealed it with Threebond 1215 I helicoiled it through the hole in the cam cover. This was done very slowly with lots of grease on the drill & tap to catch the swarf, I also fished out any other bits I could see with a grease coated screwdriver. I'm pretty sure everything has come out, if not it's such crap soft metal I can't see it doing any damage on it's way to the sump. We'll see.

Test ride to a bike night later to confirm the oil leak has gone.

Well it runs fine so no swarf got anywhere important. The leak is sorted too, which is nice as it's waste of money buying oil to see it fall out the side.

I think I'll have to read the manual to find how to check for cam chain wear, I'm sure I could lift a link slightly further off one of the cam gears than I could previously. I've got a feeling it involves removing the top guide & measuring the links.

Does it rattle yet? If not it's good to go, I take it these don't wear through the cases rather than the tensioners

I've heard of one of two dying around 180-190k miles due to the cam chain letting go. It doesn't wear anywhere it just snaps without any noises etc before hand.
