What did you do today?

Talk about your cars etc here. Keep it sort of sensible and on topic please.

Yeah spoke to them again yesterday when they phoned me. One of their "Desktop Investigators" is following it up.

Focarse earning it's keep in scaring all the brand new and expensive cars in the train station car park.

Booked in an MOT but the earliest my favourite garage could do is 8th September. It expires on the 13th September so kind of makes sense to have it later. However I wanted it later as I might dispose of the car quickly if I find a decent TT. A full MOT would make that a lot easier. Problem is, I'll probably find something sooner than that date.

Could go elsewhere but I've been using the same garage for the last 10+ years now and can safely implicitly trust them for their tests and work. Also convenient for me to drop in and walk to work.

I may have to find somewhere else if their diary is going to be so full for so long. But where as I don't want it miles away and then the issue of trusting them.

Still deciding whether to do the cambelt or not. Given the state of the paintwork, it makes little sense to put too much money into this car. That being said, I quite fancy the challenge of doing it on this - even if not economically sensible. No point unless it passes the MOT reasonably easily though.

If it's similar to the 1.25 Festering I did cam timing on once, it takes longer to take the bumper off & then the front wheel than to time the belt. Bumper etc has to come off for access to the pulleys. That was keyless pulleys with a taper fit, surprisingly simple to do. I think the locking kit was about £6 as it's only a pin & a flat bar.

Yeah I think that's basically it. Tools are about 12 quid off eBay. Also need a stretch belt tool too.

Cambelt, tensioner and bolt kit is £50. Water pump is off the aux belt so if I'm able to keep the belt, probably not change that if it's happy.

But tools, cambelt kit, oil+filters looking at £100 expenditure. Front tyres are pretty skinny so another £100.

With £50 MOT then I'd be £800 in. Not sure if the car really is worth that. But then it'd be a sorted car with a fresh MOT. With shit paint.

Keep using the same garage. I've had my fingers burnt a fair few times since the garage I used for twenty years retired.
You'll regret it.

Or get the MOT done and just use as is. Belt cracked, so not sure how long left really.

Or get the MOT and cambelt done, then use as is.

I'll probably only put like a thousand or two miles on in a 6month period.

I wish Panhard65 was a bit closer, as I'd chuck stuff his way. (That is if he actually wants the work on my knackered old cars 😆). But it's 90 mins roundtrip when the motorway is quiet in the wrong direction for me.

Pretty much all garages are in the same boat, I am pretty much booked until september. There were quite a few packed it in when Covid hit as work dropped off a cliff especially for mot's. Now with all the EV shit and more and more people going the PCP route there are less people coming into the game as it will be a dying trade. I don't mind working on the odd old bit of crap but it is quite a trek from Bristol especially this time of year.
