You can do that but a bit always drops in and a tiny bit of oil makes a lot of smoke.
Still, looks a simple enough job to replace the gasket (he said).
What did you do today?

Got that horn working; cleaned all the contacts and still wouldn't work, tested continuity and found that the flapper wasn't tensioned enough so tweaked that and works great now. All the previous ones I've repaired have had a screw which adjusts the little flapper contact bit this didn't.

I have a habit of buying broken mechanical things, it seems.

Indeed. But you do bodge them together quite well.

Re: What did you do today?
Half day friday so decided to have a go at a broken spring.
I'd found two broken pieces on the road when walking the dog and assuming it was my daughter flying over the bumps in her polo again, returned to the house to give her a bollocking. Nobody else had been up the road apart from me, so it was a safe bet.
After batting off her denials of driving too fast, I discovered of course that it was indeed me that had broken the spring on the old golf I've been using lately. The row would have done her good, so no worries there.
Yep, that's fucked.
I'm not a fan of these jobs. If someone can come up with a better idea than having to use a spline bit to remove a drop link, I'll be very grateful. As per with semi-old vag shite, it didn't all come apart nicely. The bottom of the strut wasn't keen to part company with the hub.
Eventually, I wrestled it out. The shimmy bearingy things at the top of the strut look grim. Can these be bought separately? Difficulty level: 87 swear words
Just hope somewhere is open to sell me a new spring now.

^ you'll notice I've borrowed a pals spring compressor to hopefully avoid hard metal meeting soft face at speed.

Re: What did you do today?
What are those things like? I'm tempted to get one as I hate springs and have 0% confidence on working with them. Not helped by my in-laws friend having a spring let go into his face in the garage he works at and ended up in hospital for nearly a month. Spring fractured just after removing the strut from the car.
