I would not let it defeat me!

Finally got it turning!

Put the plugs in, threw a bit of fuel down the carb and it barked off then backfired, nearly leaving me with only one eyebrow.

Battery is on charge. Neighbors hate me, because with just the headers it's not exactly quiet.

But

IT GOES AGAIN

New valve cover seals. To replace the missing ones.

Tried starting it up, nada. Investigation pends.

No, I think I cooked the starter trying to free the engine off.

I took the spare apart to see if it could be fixed, all it previously did was buzz and smoke. Since then it had been submerged in rainwater for several months.

It spins now so we'll see if it's any better another day.

Rebuilt starter works much better.

Engine pops and farts but refuses to run.

I don't know if I have the enthusiasm to continue spending time on this block. It was pretty wrecked to begin with, it's worse now.

Yeah, it's almost there.

Engine cores have gone up in price though. I'm not doing much to this one that costs money. It's not worth it

What's brought that on then? You'd think they'd be ten a penny over there as they have made umpteen million of them over the years?

I really don't know. I was looking at 440's last year and a rebuilt one was around $2500 (which is not too bad given that the big blocks are sought after). A tatty "just pulled from a motorhome in Arizona" engine with 200k on (they usually need rebuilding every 75k or so), and otherwise unknown provenance is the same price now, with rebuilt ones in the $8k range.

A rebuilt 318 still comes in under a grand, though. Polyhemi blocks even less.
