Unlike most people I don't look at a Mk1 Granada and think of The Sweeney, I actually think of the randy drink drive love interest in Butterflies.
Me too, but more than that . I started what has become my life's career driving a Grananda for a piss head that lost his licence.
In my case I was a an 18 year old office messenger and drove a Mk2 Ghia X ( UPD 26X) for a year. When he got his licence back , the board thought it safer I kept driving him- the cars got posher, but to my mind not better. I've never done anything else to make a living since.
I've owned upwards of 20 Granadas and my dream spec is either a 3.0 GL in metallic green ( like Leonard's 2nd one in Butterflies) or a Signal yellow 3.0 S - Sadly unless a lottery win happens they're as unattainable to me as a GTO.
Leonard's 3000 GL was Jade green, and I don't think the Signal colours were available on the Granada. A Roman bronze 3000 Ghia saloon would do me. The Granada sold well because it was as good as the opposition and generally less money. But Ford got greedy - even in '82, a 2.8i Ghia was pricier than a 528i and the more basic 2.8i almost as much. The rest is history.
My uncle had a mk1 ghia 3.0 in green with black vinyl roof. It was still in his garage until about 5 years ago then I discovered he sold it for a few hundred quid to some guy in Aberdeen. Disappointed I was.
I'll try and find a pic.

Saw this Dodge Spacevan parked up outside work a few weeks back, causing me to do a helluva double-take.

Really did feel like I'd slipped back to 1987 or so as well... just that correct level of shonkiness that a well-used six-year-old van might have. Not a complete scrapper just yet, but dents, scab and aerosol paint repairs suggests that it's getting there...

Literally. Mk1 Granadas are probably the toughest cars on the oval
Not really, they're tough for there time and the V6 was built to race with the dizzy nicely tucked away at the back, most granny's now being raced are built tough. Given the choice of being followed in I would go for a metrocab or a rhodius - look at some old photos from the day at how they bend then look at photos of modern bildge leaving a meeting...
I haven't raced for 20 years... When I was doing it, Granadas were getting scarce but Bluebirds were the next good tough banger. So I may be a little behind the times.
In Germany, where there are only very few ovals and banger racing consequently is mostly done on Rallycross tracks, the weapon of choice were those Audis. They absolutely dominated the class, while Granadas were considered rubbish. They might be if there is a succession of left and right turns, because they were popular once a track was indeed oval. BMWs were always shit and had no handling here nor there.
