Still doing some filler work on the left hand wing but it's nearly there.

So I finally decided it was time to attack the tailgate. Both the outer skin and the inner parts were rotten. Some might say to just but another but that would mean a day out of my life going to buy one then spending £100 or so in one that still needs work so I prefer to fix this one.

I did it half at a time otherwise I would forget what it was supposed to be like.

Luckily most of this won't be on show so it doesn't have to be perfect.

So I turned it over and started to get the paint off the topside, which looked a lot better than underneath.

when cleaning it off I found several small holes so cut them out and welded them up. Had to be quite careful so I didn't warp the panel

I decided to cut away the thicker metal underneath too as I could seal the repair from behind. The whole panel will be festering away behind and the rust will break out at some point in different places in sure! Well, I warped it anyway so wobbed the whole thing

As I don't have enough to do I thought I would get this thing out, MoT it and possibly sell it.

The only fault I know if is the wiper has gone floppy on the passenger side, to the point where it was damaging the paintwork.

it turned out that the spindle had seized inside the housing causing the nut to undo. This snapped the aluminium housing which allowed the wipers to work again. I'm ashamed to say it had been like this a while before the car was laid up. I've tried to buy another but the people breaking them don't seem to want to bother selling and posting parts so I've tried to fix it. Using this

I ground out the break to make a crevasse. One bit at a time, I put a dot of superglue on the crack then a sprinkle of bicarbonate of soda and it went rock hard. It seems fixed but time will tell

I suppose though that it only has to be strong enough for me to reassemble it. With the spindle greased it should just turn on that... This is the driver's side by the way...

I've never heard of the superglue and bicarb trick before.

What does the bicarb do?

It makes it turn into Moon rock.
The trick is very popular among the modelling crowd. I think the aeroplane guys came up with it first, for mounting the wings, a notorious weak spot on plastic models.

Although, is it really a road vehicle? It's not been on the road since 1987...

Sorry to piss on your parade, but road vehicles classed as classic, vintage, or historic, are explicitly exempt from the directive. Thus you are as within The Law™ as any other model citizen.

Today I set myself one simple car related task. Turn the Renault around. It just means tidying the garage a bit and moving the cars off the driveway but the Renault wouldn't start. It usually starts first flick of the key. So I changed the fuel filter which was dirty, then cleaned the gauze in the carb which was also a bit grubby. It would run with petrol poured down the carb but that's all. Took the top of the carb off and cleaned the float chamber and all the jets. Still the same. I Took the plugs out, they are quite wet. I'm surprised if started at all. I'll buy new ones tomorrow, these ones are probably at least 20 years old. It still won't start though, I know that already
