I got through to the servicing department and they were far more helpful.

They'll send someone to collect it on the 16th and they reckon it'll be back the same afternoon.

Apparently it's for any E36's that slipped through the net last time. Which is very few now - less than 100 cars. It's a proper BMW requested recall via DVLA although BMW aren't legally obliged to do anything.

Oooh my car is special!

In other news I ordered a set of Osram Nightbreakers for it. Yesterday's 50 mile drive home in the dark reminded me how dire E36 headlights are. :D

In comparison the 205 has relatively new headlight units (well, about 18 months old now). They're absolutely ace.

I think my Peugeot Partner's headlights fall squarely into the "dangerous" category. Low beam is fucking useless, even compared to the candles in jam jars featured on the rest of my old crocks. It may even be as bad as the 5 3/4 sealed beams on my Dolly 1850 were, and they were bad.

The 205's lights are mega bright, I noticed at the last unit meet that they were impressively intense for what is a rather old car.

Makes a huge difference if they are aiming in the right direction as specified. The current MOT rules have humongous allowances for a pass - they only care that you aren't dazzling other cunts, not whether you can see where you are going.

In my experience the 205 lights, just like the 405 are just a bloody good design, they work very well indeed.

It's almost as though a large light unit in a relatively simple shape is a good thing.
As opposed to the usual tiny, weirdly shaped excuses for headlights seen everywhere.
